I think most cars and trucks about 35 or 40 years old have undergone a many of paintings. LOL!!! Are you gonna take it down to the metal?

Yeah, you better strip tht thing all the way down to bare metal so you can start with a solid foundation.

Black is epoxy, green color is base coat, yellow is a primer, red is a base color, gray is a primer, and green is a base coat. So i will say your truck was painted 3 colors in its life. (green, red, green) and now your blue!?!?!? That is WAY to much paint on any truck!!! I would strip it down and start with bare metal!! Other wise there is a good chance of having MAJOR paint issues!

Re: Can you tell how many times it's been painted

Black,is your factory Primer..green was the factory color, yellow is a old promer sealer from the late 70's ,red was the color they painted over the yellow primer sealer, gray is a either a primer or a sealer they used before painting the truck Green. more likely the Gray is a sealer to block a reaction to the old lacquer paint.
thats alot of paint and primer....I would thin it a little by sanding the truck down as far as you can to keep your New Blue from cracking and checking if its lacquer paint ....just my opinion, Im sure you will get 100 other opinions

Re: Can you tell how many times it's been painted

The only thing I am worried about is that the old paint may contain lead so I was not planning on going that far. And cannot afford to have it media blasted. I was going to put on some high build primer, primer sealer and have it painted. Is that a bad idea I just do not know if the old paint was lead based and it is not going to be a show truck just a weekend driver.
