Two important questions

Before I dive into changing the intake and HEI tomorrow I have two important questions.

First Important (but dumb!) Question: Am I right in thinking that number one cylinder on a SBC is the front one passenger side and then they go front to back and then back to front on the other side (i.e. round in a circle)?

Second Important (but dumb!) Question: If I am using RTV sealant instead of the rubbber end seals on the intake what size bead of RTV do I need to use?

I'm sure once I start stripping it down I'll be running inside with more questions and cursing the time difference as most of you guys will still be in bed.

Re: Two important questions

actually #1 cylinder is on the driver side at the front of the engine and #2 is at the front of the passenger side (back and forth) so 1,3,5,7 are all on the driver side going to the back of the engine and 2,4,6,8 on the passenger side from front to back of the engine. As for the silicone, you want to use like a 3/8 size bead to make sure it seals good, with out all squeezing out so it forms a "gasket". Hope this helps!

Re: Two important questions

before you gently put the intake on let the RTV set for 15 min or so ..also if you can wait till the next morning to start it you'll be better off as it has time to cure abit before getting hot and oilly......

personally I like to use the gasket for the front and rear...putting a dab in eash corner of where the block, intake and heads meet...also use Fel Pro or do it again...

Re: Two important questions

What I like to do is take a center punch and make several dimples on the block under the bead of silicone so when it dries it doesn't slide out. And like said before make sure everything is squeaky clean. You can use some brake or carb cleaner on a rag.

Re: Two important questions

Thanks for the info guys, I have a felpro gasket set which does have the rubber end seals in it so I'll have a look when I get the old intake off. The gasket does have the centre hole for the heat passage doodad but also comes with a metal restrictor plate with a hole in. Should I be using this or leave it open. The new manifold is a Performer EPS. I have a tin of gasket remover and plenty of brake cleaner.

The truk is in the UK not France and its a standard US truck so I get to sit near the pavement (sidewalk) and look at all the pretty girls! In France it would be on the right side, just us old fashioned countries that drive on the left (right, sorry correct) side of the road!

I'm going to label the plug wires with some masking tape and numbers before I take the dizzy cap off so I can wire the new one up right.

Looks like its gonna be a nice day, temperature forecast to be hitting 26/27 degrees C so I shall be working outside with plenty of sunscreen on in the hope of getting a tan.
