will it work or am i crazy?
i have an '09 pontiac 6.0 L76 with trans. 6L80 that i want to try and put in a 70 stepside. i'm trying to convert it back to a streetable truck. it has a tilt front end with mustang II front end. i already know that this trans. is huge (size) and i want a bench seat instead of buckets. the truck is also tubbed.
i'm going for a pro touring look. i don't really want a boring 350. i want something with power and is good on gas. that is why i chose this motor. i may have bit off more than i can chew. my questions are: can it be done w/o costing a fortune? should i scrap it now and start over? if so, what power plant will work? any input will be greatly appreciated. thnx, Bird |

Re: will it work or am i crazy?
It can be done, there are a few build threads on here about how to do it. I don't know about the bench seat question, but I would caution you to take a careful inventory of your mechanical abilities before you begin. This will not be a swap for the faint of heart.

Re: will it work or am i crazy?
Given that it is an LS series motor- the conversion will be fairly straightforward if you understand everything that is involved. I would check out "LS1tech.com" for scads of information from guys who live and breathe LS engines! I am by no means an expert on this and haven't even done it yet, but from what I've read there are a few key systems that need to be modified to make this work;
1. Fuel. You'll need a high pressure in tank or external fuel pump w/ pressure regulator. Alot of guys are running Walbro pumps and Corvette FPR's for ease of installation. 2. Motor Mounts. This is fairly simple, but you'll need to fab or buy adapter brackets to mate the LS block to your Gen I mounts. 3. Exhaust. Gotta have provisions for O2 sensors. 4. Oil pan. If I recall you need to run either a truck (LQ9) or F-Body oil pan. 5. Wiring. You'll probably need to send in your harness and ECM to have some circuits deleted and the computer re-flashed to eliminate some of the security stuff used in the original car. 6. DBW (Drive by Wire). You'll have to get an aftermarket throttle pedal to work with the factory DBW system. 7. Trans mount and driveline. You'll also probably need to run a "high-hump" to clear the tranny, but you'd still be ok for a bench seat. I'm sure there is more that I am forgetting. BTW- this is not a "cheap" conversion, but one that I feel is worth every penny!

Re: will it work or am i crazy?
Putting that motor and trans in your truck is a bad idea...........Just let me know and I'll come take them off your hands so you don't have to worry about it.
Sarcasm aside, yes it can be made to work VERY well. |
