200r4 question?
first thing im wondering is will i have to move the trans cross member if i go from a th400 to 200r4?
second i think i found a good deal on a core to rebuild...$75. is that a pretty good deal? third what the heck is a "unibolt" 200r4?

Re: 200r4 question?
Crossmember will need to be moved back, but there should already be holes in the frame.
Thats probably a fair price for a core. Unibolt means it has both bolt patterns for Chevrolet and for Buick Olds Pontiac |

Re: 200r4 question?
Leave your crossmember in the TH400 position. The distance from the bellhousing face to the mount is the same on both transmissions.
I have never heard the term "unibolt" before, but all the 200-4Rs I have seen had a dual-pattern bellhousing which would fit both Chevy and BOP. That is probably what "unibolt" means. Ray |

Re: 200r4 question?
i heard that the 200 and 700 r4 will bolt right in with no mods if you have a 400 trans

Re: 200r4 question?
you'll need driveshaft done as the th400 tranny has a different type of yoke

Re: 200r4 question?
i just talked to the guy about the trans and im getting it for 50 bucks! the said it was behind a 87 monte carlo with a 4.3 v6 is that goin to be a problem? im goin to have it rebuilt to a pretty stout trans but the core only has 95k miles on it so im thinking that it might be in decent shape.

Re: 200r4 question?
Coming off of a V6 you will probably have to change both the drive and driven speedo gears. Have the builder install the correct ones for your application when he builds it as the drive gear on this tranny is a part of the governor.

Re: 200r4 question?
Lots of info on Bowtie Overdrives too along with the Buick Grand National site. Best trans came from the GN's (virtually impossible to find) and the Monte SS's. Both had valve bodies that would shift at 5000 rpms under wot. The rest (Cadalacs, Chevy's Olds, etc.) shift at 3000 rpms wot. Mine was from an 84 V8 olds and it shifts exactly like Grandpa's olds, way too smooth and way too soft. When I change engines, I will have to do some work on the transmission too. Right now with the original 307, it doesn't much matter. TV cable adjustment is critical to the 200 4R's longevity. You will need a bracket that permits the proper adjustment. Several tranny builders such as Bowtie OD's make them for specific carbs. Keep us posted on what you learn.

Re: 200r4 question?
check our the ratios and see which will work best for you. I like the closer 1-2 and lower 4th ratio of the 200-4r
