Shock Absorber Recommendations

After nearly 20 years on the rears and 10 years on the front, I’m in need of new shocks. Is there a preferred brand and model – Monroe, KYB, Gabriel, something else? This is for a drive around town on retirement pay application, so the budget won’t stretch to anything exotic or really expensive. Thanks for any and all input.

Re: Shock Absorber Recommendations

All the ones you mentioned are well represented on many threads here..do a search. Classic Performance has a good value shock, and you can get extra discount if you talk to them and mention this board...usually 10% off. Several members report Doetsch are too rough/stiff; thats what I bought, but haven't got to drive them yet.

Re: Shock Absorber Recommendations

Anyone used Bilsteins on a lowered C-10?
I have had them on my OTM for years and love them.

Heater, what airport is that?
I am on an airport just south of denton.

Re: Shock Absorber Recommendations

I just put Monroe Gas-Matics on the '66 Chevy K10 we are restoring. The rears were difficult to find, due to the 3/4" I.D. top & bottom mounts, but otherwise, the 1/2 ton shocks were listed with every source I checked.

GLE.

Gainesville. '59 Cessna 175. What are you flying?

I've flown into Alliance and Denton, but not propwash. I usually swing wide out by Decatur when going around that area/Ft. Worth.

Re: Shock Absorber Recommendations

I've used the Edelbrock shocks on three of my lowered trucks and loved them. Unfortunately have not found any for a lowered 60-66, but they do have an application for non-lowered 60-66. They are a little more expensive though.

Yes Bilsteins are a bit more, but they have a lifetime warranty.
I have 210k on my factory Bilsteins on my OTM.

Heater, We have a Cherokee 180 and a 1949 Globe/Temco Swift.

Imagine suggesting that Mark use the search option. Kind of like asking the guy at NAPA if he knows a parts store that has good counter help.

Re: Shock Absorber Recommendations

Mark,

I have a buddy that does a lot of suspension work, mostly lowering cars and trucks http://www.hackersparadise.biz/index.html . He uses KYB exclusively, swears by them. However my experience from riding in his vehicles is KYB are harsh.

CPP stocks these: http://www.classicperform.com/6092chevtrk.htm#43
KY4231G 1960-62 rear stock, each $49.00

KY4163G 1963-72 rear stock, each $49.00
That being said.... I have always used Monroe shocks and that's what is on my 1965 C10 right now... never had a problem with them but I too am due for a new set now that I lowered mine

My experience has been that if you want a softer ride stick with Monroe.

Re: Shock Absorber Recommendations

Thanks again guys for all the responses and guidance. I'm finding shopping for shocks is just about as difficult as try to pick out a mattress. In the old days there were like 2-3 choices. Now there's dozens of variations even within the same brand, and with all the marketing hype it's somewhat difficult to determine what the spec's will actually mean in actual performance. The biggest problem is trying to find a matching set for a 1960 with a 75 front end, because the choices are so limited for the rear of the 60-62.

Have a great week!

Boy you guys are sensitive; I mentioned search because there was a recent thread on the same subject, ...and the next sentence I'm turning you on to CPP's shocks, and all you remember is do a search. Talk to Jeff at CPP if you want a discount, he quoted me $28 each.

Re: Shock Absorber Recommendations

Carquest sells a re-labeled KYB GR-2 @ a decent price. GR-2's ride better than KYB's old school (Gas-a-Just) shocks. My preference would be Bilsteins if the budget allows (kind of like spending $50ea for a bias-ply tires or $85 for radials).

i ran Monroes on my '93 short/step C-1500 until i lowered it...then i slammed it 5" front & 8" rear w/ c-notch...Doetsch came with the kit...i thought they rode well up front...being that low, the rear would've been harsh with anything since i bottomed out on big bumps...otherwise i thought the truck rode well front & rear....only my experience though

I had them on my 89 C-1500 with a 4-6 drop. I didn't like them. I pulled them of and got the Edelbrocks. Much better ride. This was 15 years ago so designs may have changed.
