Where did you get your new Q-jet?

When I bought my truck it had an edelbrock 1406 on it. Its giving me problems and I want to go back to a Q-jet. I looked at the Jet stage 2 Q-jet but $450 is a little out of my budget. I know there are guys out there building quality carbs for a fraction of what JET sells them for.

So where did you get yours?

And I'm not opposed to a DIY. But I don't have a good core and haven't seen one in a yard around here for a while. And I would need more than a standard rebuild kit since my truck has the standard cam/intake/header upgrades. So I am considering a new one.

Re: Where did you get your new Q-jet?

Jet is ok but a little over-rated in my opinion. When I built my bb truck, I sent the original carb to them with all of the engine specs to custom tailor the carb to my specific combo. I had taken te carb apart before sending it to them and recorded what was there. carb came back ran ok, about them same as before. After two years started having accelerator pump issues, so I pulled it apart, other than sealing the well plugs and some small tweeks- brass float instead of composite, everything was the same. $400 wasted in my opinion. I bought a unit from guy in alabama on ebay, carb was correct date etc. etc. and recolored for $250. It has given no problems and it looks like I will be getting another from him for the 4x4. think it is the carb doc or something of the sort on ebay.

OK, You stated that "I know there are guys out there building quality carbs for a fraction of what JET sells them for" Who are they? BTW, Sean Murphy Induction is one of the best, not cheap. Also Cliff's High Performance is another great one.

Re: Where did you get your new Q-jet?

I got mine from these guys: http://www.carb-x.com/index.php/vmchk/Chevrolet-Trucks

I've been running the same Q jet on my engine for the last 10 years with out any problems.

Nothing fancy, just a solid rebuilt Q jet for a decent price.

Thank you for the link. Sure looks like a good source for a Q-jet and the price is good.

I buy cores at the swap meet or pick it yourself lots for $5-25. I put a kit in them & have a great carb for $50-75.

How do you get them to work right? I tried rebuilding mine twice and couldn't get it to work for crap. Replaced the accelerator pump, set the float everything. I finally got tired of it and got an Edelbrock.

Re: Where did you get your new Q-jet?

I have a Q-jet and the problem I am having with it is if it sets a day or so the truck will not start without hitting it with starting fluid.

At first I thought it may have been a fuel pump problem, but I replaced the engine and put the carb on it with the same problem.

Supposedly the Q-jet was rebuilt just before I bought the truck a few years ago.

He also has a book that came in mighty handy when I did finally start refurbishing that carb.

(I know I sound like a shill, but his site is definitely worth checking out.)

Re: Where did you get your new Q-jet?

Cliffs performance here. bought a correct date coded 4mv off the 'bay for $25. his quote for a complete rebuild and set up for my specific application was approximately $250. he's busy, so turn around isn't going to be overnight.

Cliffs looks good but I guess I would have to supply a core, right?
Anybody else?

scaring up a core won't be a sweat. they are all over the place at swapmeets, cl, and ebay. bet you could find a decent core for under 30 bones.

many, many folks ditched them for supposedly "easier to set up" carbs. but a correctly tuned Q runs strong and gets very good gas mileage when your foot's not in it. I want to run a completely bone stock engine compartment, and my Q will be look right at home in there.

on the other hand, LMC does sell reman. 4mv Q's for $300, fyi.
