Bed Angle Pieces
I am currently taking the wooden bed out of my 67 stepside. Everything was going good untill I tried to remove the two angle strips at the sides. I have all of the screws out from the bottom and the stripes in the middle just came right out.
What am I missing? Do I have to take the back fenders off, are there screws holding the angle pieces to the sides of the bed that can't be seen? Need help, Thanks, Guy |

I believe they are spot welded to the bedsides.

Thanks guys,
Went and got a couple of grinding wheels for the drill. My idea is to grind down untill I can locate the welds and than drill them just enough to make them release. Most are hinden under the rear fenders so I may be able to pull this one of. Guy |

Do you think you will have to take the fenders off? I am looking to do the same thing and don't want to take the fenders off.

They are welded every 3 inches. I use a 4" electric angle grinder and it is still a bear to grind all of them flat.

Hey Everyone,
I have one angle strip out and all of the other wood except the other angle strip on the passengers side. It's has been easy. I started yesterday and have done ok so for. I built two blocks the same height as the front two braces and bolted them in place to support the bed's front body panel and bolted the back end one bolt on each side. I'm going to restore the frame under the bed now that it is open and easy to get to. My wood is teak. I ordered 'Sikkens Cetol Marine Gloss' yesterday. A word to the wise, if you are planning to replace the angle pieces in your wooden bed. The two right angle strips have tack welds most of the way along the angles. But the 6 to 8 inches closest to the the truck cab have a straight weld and must be cut free. I used a cuting wheel but the heat burnt the paint on the outside of the bed between the rear fender and the front of the bed. This turned out to be a more difficult project than I had anticipated.

Got the other angle piece cut free and went down to the local high pressure car wash. Cleaned my frame up and am waiting for Eastwood's rust encapsulator to refinish it. After I get the frame it will be back to the bed refurbish project. Funny how one thing can lead you down roads you hadn't even thought of!

The angles I used just clip over the old one and bolt on. That was the best way to go if your building a driver.
