grinding granny gear

hey guys my granny gear four speed is giving trouble... so i know it needs a clutch but just today ive noticed that if you are speed shifting when you pull down form 3rd to 4th it grinds perty bad and i will have the clutch all the way to the floor is it just couse its ogt a 30 some year old clutch that aint no count or do ya think a syncro is shot or somthin have eny of yall had this problem?

Probably not your issue, but I have been having trouble shifting my granny 4 spd lately and it turned out to be the adjustment linkage on the clutch fork. The stop nut keeps working its way down the thread until the clutch is barely engaging - takes about a month for this to happen after an adjustment. I'm still trying to determine the proper setup for my truck and whether or not I need another spring in addition to the one I have. I probably will just put another nut behind the stop nut, in addition to the one behind the steering wheel

thanks tusconjwt! im gonna try to adjust it today then, let me throw another question at ya dose your clutch pedel come up all the way or do you have to help it with your foot. dad said that mine has always needed a little help to get the pedal all the way up.

Mine used to stick until the clutch fork finally broke to a point the clutch didn't work. It slowly got harder & harder to shift and the clutch engaged closer & closer to the floor.

If your adjuster is all the way out you may have some damaged clutch parts causing your problem.

well the adjuster nut is lacking about 2 threads from being flush with the end of the bolt, but i checked the free travel on the clutch pedal and it was between 3/4-1 inch of play like my chiltons manual recomends. i think its gonna be new clutch time eny ways couse that is the orignal clutch that came in it.

btw i want to thank yall for making me get under my truck and check that adjustment couse i got under there and everything was covered in brake fluid and i found out my master cylender is bad im glad i just didnt find out the hard way

If you adjuster nut is that far to the end of the threaded bolt, then it is out of adjustment. My truck has about 1" of thread showing beyond the nut. No kidding - when I set it to 1" of thread showing it is like shifting a brand new transmission. Regardless of what the Chilton's manual says, you have an old clutch and it won't hurt to try to adjust it to show some threads and see what happens. From what I have read, a clutch pedal that does not return all the way could be as simple as a weak clutch spring, or more serious problem in the clutch itself. Try to adjust to 1" of thread, then install a new clutch spring if that does not help, and let us know what happens. Good luck.
