HEI Conversion??
Hey y'all,
I am back finally. After the tragic death of my wrench I am finally working on our 1968 Suburban. It has the 292 straight 6 in it and I would like to upgrade to an HEI Distributor system, anyone have any idea how the easiest way to go about it and where I can find the parts I need to do it. I am also looking to upgrade from the oilbath air cleaner to a more modern one, any ideas there also?? OneBad68 |

Re: HEI Conversion??
I did the HEI conversion on my '67 Suburban with a 292. A little research and background helped - search this site under the electrical forum - might also be under the FAQs. Also, take a look at www.madelectrical.com - lots of good background info on engine electrical, including updating the alternator/regulator system if you're so inclined. I searched the local wrecking yard for a '75 or later (I don't know to what year) Chevy six (250 is ok). The earlier HEIs had separate ignition coils, the later ones have the coil on the cap - a little cleaner look in my opinion. I took the plug wires too for an easier swap, new ones probably wouldn't be a bad idea. You'll need an upgraded, higher-amp, 12V supply to the coil. Again, search the electrical forum for ideas. I used a relay system which I'm told was over-kill but so far seems to do the job. Good luck!

Thank you for the information. I really want to get this beastie running and not have to worry about things.

Re: HEI Conversion??
if i didn't have a bad boy 406sbc to throw in my 72 burb, i'd prefer that it had come with a 250 so i could swap it for a hopped up 292.
you can get crazy with those engines....hi-po exhaust manifolds, bigger or multi-carb intakes, fuel injection, even a roller valvetrain is possible i hear. old school with all the benefits of modern engineering. put a petronix conversion on your stock dissy like i did on my truck. i hear they have a more hi=po (more hei like) petronix II series out. i'd love to have a granny gear in the rear diff and a modern 6 speed (.7 5th gear and .52 6th gear) behind a hot rod 292. different from the crowd and would make for an awesome cruiser and tow vehicle. Re: HEI Conversion??
Skip white Hei. About 75 bucks on ebay. I have one on my 65 c10 with a 230. It replaced a pertronix. Cured all my misfires too. Best bang for the buck!!! Pertronix is just a replacement for the points installed in a worn out 45 year old dizzy. JMHO
