anyone here dropped leaf springs?

I had a leaf spring break when taking everything apart on my truck to replace bushings and paint. I now need to replace them. I was going to lower with shackles and hangers originally, but now I may do it with 5in dropped leaf springs.

Anyone used these before? Any problems or things I should be aware of?

Re: anyone here dropped leaf springs?

I have had them on my truck for 5 years or so with no problems. Mine are 4" dropped leaves by Western Chassis. I would say they dropped it about 5" though. It rides very well, better than with the stock springs, and it handles well. I really need to cut out the bump stop brackets, though. On a severe bump they can bottom out. It is rare, but it happens.

The only downside I am aware of is that they reduce the carrying capacity of your truck. I don't really haul anything very heavy, so it has not been a problem. I tow a couple of different boats on occasion with no problems, but I wouldn't want to haul a car on an 18' trailer or anything. If I ever get anything like that, I'll add helper bags.

Re: anyone here dropped leaf springs?

Thanks for the info. I am still unsure whether I will use new stock springs and then lower with shackles and hangers, ( I already have them) or buy some new dropped leaves. The stock leaves are about $200.00 cheaper. If I could get my money back for the hangers I would feel better about spending the extra cash.

You might also consider a flip kit. It will get you about 5 inches or so, and can be used with stock springs. That would probably still cost less than drop springs.
