Is this worth buying?'87 4x4 suburban.

Hey guys,

I came across another suburban for cheap. Its a '87 4x4 burb. Its white with blue interior. Ig hasn't been started in two years and has some rust on the hood and some on the top of the cab. Its all complete just like it was when it was parked. I can get it for $500. Is it worth buying for just the parts if I can't get it running? It has decent buckets in it and I'm sure I could find someone wanting the axles. Should I go ahead and pick it up even though I don't actually have a immediate use for it at the moment? I'm about to start a rebuild on my dads '79 Jimmy, but I already found a really clean '80 model burb to use as a parts donor if I need it. I'm the kinda guy I'll buy somethig if its a good deal even if I don't need it.
Opinions please....whats it worth parted out?

That one has been up for a while. I don't have any use for it, being 4wd, but it might make a decent drivetrain donor for your '79 if you wanted to go that way. Should have a TBI 350, 700R4, and 208 transfer case.

I don't have a immediate use for it. The plan for the '79 is to go back with a 5.7ltr fuel injection setup. I don't have quick access to parts like you guys in OKC and Dallas. We don't have any good salvage yards in my area(within 75 miles) and none of them will let you pick and pull your own stuff. The small time bone yards around here are also very high. I just thought it might be a good source for parts for future projects. I got the guy down from $750 to $500 and I'm sure with $100 bills in hand he'd prolly come down another $100.

Re: Is this worth buying?'87 4x4 suburban.

I would vote yes. I picked up an '88 that had a blown motor, mainly for the seats and console. I have been pleasantly surprised at the parts I have pulled off and used.

I have also been surprised at the amount of people who stop by and offer to by things off of it that I don't need. I have made back my original purchase price, plus $125.00 extra, so my seats didn't cost me anything, and my wife has been impressed with how it worked out.

This is kinda the same idea I had. I figured I could make my money back plus be able to provide some parts that people needed.

As mentioned earlier it would make a great drive train donor for your project and with the lack of decent salvage yards near you it is well worth $500 to have it around.

Go for it.

If you decide to part out the '80, I will help you make some of your money back there, also.

Not to hi-jack but I could help you get rid of some parts off of it, either way, if you have the room to keep it around and the means to disassemble it as need be for parting out, go for it. Scrap is at a decent price and even a bare shell on one of these things has to be worth $150-$200. You would do ok on it.

Re: Is this worth buying?'87 4x4 suburban.

YES

Get it now

you would be able to get your investment out of the drivetrain plus the scrap would probly more than cover the cost to get it home and such
The body parts look decent and A mint set of rear doors can be worth thier wheight in gold to some people
also its nice to keep things like the taillights, marker lights, dash(around the gauges) and all the little screws that go with.
And lets not forget about the Fuel tank, it'll probly be an electric in tank pump but either way its worth something

Yes and do I need them?? No, I dont, but I guess I have developed a problem with wanting every square body I see. Actually, while towing the '80 burb home today I stopped off at another place to look at a '85 crew cab dually. If Id had a way to get it home right then, Id have bought it too. I have no clue what I'll do with all of them, but hopefully I can either fix them up and sell them to someone that will appreciate them and take care of them, or atleast help some people out with parts that they are needing in the future.

Also, when you look at the overall picture, I'll have two pretty decent, rust free, and complete suburbans for $800 total. At that price I think Im safe with the purchases. Plus, as another added bonus when I pulled up today at my shop with the '80 Burb my grandpa's eyes kinda lit up and he got a big smile on his face. I told him I was bringing home a $300 burb so he was expecting a rusty bucket of bolts. He got all excited and started talking about how we'd get it running in no time and have it shined up and ready to roadtrip by the end of the week He's 83 years old and is in very poor health, but he still came out in the 100 degree heat today after I unloaded it and started checking all the fluids and giving it the ole' look over.

Re: Is this worth buying?'87 4x4 suburban.

Hey don't pass these things up. just in parts alone they are worth 300% more then what you bought them for.

That's great that you got gramps that excited. There probably is not much out there that does any more.
