traded a pellet rifle for a 350 today

Well, traded a pellet rifle for a 350 today (cast # 3970010). A nice German RWS model 52 .22 caliber (not like a reg. 40.00 pellet rifle, lol) but I'm happy. A friend got it from an old hog famer, said it was too powerful for him. Heard it run in a close friend's son's truck (now decesed...was like a brother). He junked the truck, so I decided I wanted it. It's all grimey, and no idea what's inside of it, yet. Finally started the Goodwrench 350 in my truck the other day (purrs like a kitten), so now I will have a good foundation to build a spare on.
Has Weiand finned aluminum valve covers, Edelbrock Performer (looks diff. than the one a friend gave me the other day, maybe older?) double-hump heads (if I am not mistaken) Holley 4 barrel (no idea which one). Regardless, I got the motor stand ready (only used it once in 15 years for a Honda motor for my brother) and a spot in the living room (kool girlfriend, of 6 yrs), so it's fixing to be show time!
Just loaded it up, and haven't cleaned it yet so.............mighty dirty people.
Posted one close up of the intake, are they all made like that around the goose neck, or did it get too hot? Have another intake cleaned up and ready to put on..so it really doesn't matter.
Was going to grab the set of ram horn manifolds laying next to it, but one looked like it got too hot.......well, was a real whiteish color.

Cool good score. Just think what you could have got if you would have traded a shot gun. Lol. J/K

Re: traded a pellet rifle for a 350 today

LOL good one Hoss! Actually, he did mention he needed a 1/2 drive impact, so if this one checks out (fingers crossed) I might have to get him an Ingersol Rand!
(Everyone I deal with has been like family for 30+ yrs) Real good people (wish they still had the junk yard...sold it years ago, but still have some choice stuff) Kinda like the old Dodge in the garage.....(thought it was a Ford Model A.... until I saw the "Dodge Brothers" badge on the grill)

OH..........think my other friend (the one who gave me this 71 GMC) wants one of these Ford trucks they have. One has a flat head V8 in it. Rough I know, but gives us something to do.....lol

Yes, those do indeed appear to be older (no bolt holes in ends) double hump heads. A good find. Hopefully the exhaust valve seats aren't trashed from lack of Lead.

Re: traded a pellet rifle for a 350 today

I'm pretty sure the #s are for a 350, I have the same castings and mine came out of a 79 corvette.

Re: traded a pellet rifle for a 350 today

Well, was so nasty on the outside, I thought it was a Performer intake, but it's a Edelbrock Torker II. For as dirty as it is on the outside, it's spotless on the inside.

Sounds like a score to me!

Check the bearings, have the heads surfaced, toss in a new cam with some roller rockers and go to town! Heh....for some reason I keep picturing an old school weiand tunnel ram on that thing with a HUGE cam.

Re: traded a pellet rifle for a 350 today

Well, still can't believe how clean it is. Had one place on the head gasket between #3 & #5 looked bad. Pulled the pan off. Cast crank. Will deff. check the rod bearings, and resurface the heads (etc.), and prob. get another cam. Don't have a puller here to get the harmonic balance off, yet. Cam lobes could look better from the parts of the lobes I can see. Rings feel great. Freeze plugs look new. I just really traded since I needed the valve covers and a future block to build, but I really can't believe how good this one is checking out.
Bored .030 over.

Oh.............just happened to think.... the head bolt in the same area of that bad place on the gasket, was only torqued to about 30lbs. (just guessing).

Re: traded a pellet rifle for a 350 today

Will take a picture of the ram horn exhausts, and post a pic. See if that one has been too hot. Should grab the other one regardless. Had a set of headers that go with this motor, chrome, but have a bit of rust.

those are 1.96 / 1.5 camel humps not 2.02 1.6.. still good though. if they were 2.02/1.6 valves, they would be so big they would be almost touching each other. you can barely fit a hair between them

Re: traded a pellet rifle for a 350 today

Good score, you didn't need that pellet rifle anyway.
The area of the block between the #3 & #5 cylinder can be checked by laying a straight edge of some kind and running a feeler gage under it.Also if the pad on the right front of the block still has the punched numbers visable, you can be pretty sure the block hasn't been decked. The motor you got is what we ran for years as stock car engines at Highland Rim and the Fairgrounds and they still use the same in some lower classes on dirt.

Re: traded a pellet rifle for a 350 today

Never thought of that MudBug. Numbers are still there. (was going to check the deck with a straight edge, but haven't yet) Figured it would be easy to decode the numbers on the front pad, but wasn't. (well, I got side tracked too...)
Rod and main bearings looked good. Little signs of wear, but nothing bad. Was a bit of crankshaft end play. Crank turned .010/.010. Carb turned out to be a Holley 4160 600cfm vac. sec. and manual choke. Cam looked quite worn, and one lobe rounded very slightly. Figure I will get the crank polished, and it will be ok.
You may know of a good machine shop in the area. The place I used to use went out of business years ago. Thanks for you help/advice.

Re: traded a pellet rifle for a 350 today

Oh.............hate to ask a stupid question, but is there a good way to check the wrist pins, or just get new ones? I would always get new ones, but this motor seems so fresh since the last rebuild (except for the camshaft). Hate to have any weak links. (think the block will be ok with a good honing, if the deck checks out)
