Oversized Rear Wheel Cylinder

In the process of changing my 6-lug to 5-lug, I recently ordered the rear brake drum rebuild kit from ECE. I received two wheel cylinders, one good one and one bad one. Both Raybestos, both made in China. Both center sections are sized right and the bolt pattern distance is the same but it looks like they have two castings for the case. The larger one also does not fit between the "ears" on the backing plate as well. The rubber boots are really squeezed in there.

I figured I'd post a pic to show the difference. (I've contacted ECE to get the right one).

I also posted a before and after. From one side anyway...

Frank

You'll see the one on the left is slightly smaller and has less material

Before rear drum rebuild (but after axles removed)

After rebuild with new Moser 5-lug axles (was going to redrill the original axles but they both had alot of pitting on the outer bearing surface so new axles for me!)

You have your new shoes on backwards. If you you replaced the axles due to pitting in the bearing surface you need to replace the bearings or you will trash your new axles

Nice looking axles. Another possible choice is to purchase axle bearings that are off set to ride on a good surface of the axle. They ride about 1/8" deeper, saves the expense of new axles.

That happened to me also. Be careful using the smaller one, not all hoses will fit in due to interference with the fitting on the hose and the bleeder screw. Drove me crazy trying to find a hose that would fit. I'd take the smaller one back and exchange for the larger one. Good luck.

Re: Oversized Rear Wheel Cylinder

My bad, that was on the front ones. I took the back ones back and exchanged them for the larger cylinders. Sorry. I also thought the smaller ones would give me less braking power. You'd think they have this stuff figured out, but.

I replaced the axle bearing and seals also. That was alot of fun.....

Good catch on the shoes reversed. I would have never noticed.
