wiw: 1958 chevrolet apache 38 panel

Hi guys, long time 67-72 owner got a chance to get a pretty neat old 1958 that needs a lot but it's a classic. Could I get a little info on it from you guys? Looks like it has original engine and all. It was a service truck when i was little in my hometown. It's currently at a metal yard waiting to be scrapped unless someone saves it.

thanks for any help,

Matt

Re: wiw: 1958 chevrolet apache 38 panel

IF it is TRULY just going to be scrapped then you should be able to pick it up for a few bucks more than the scrap value. If the guy is just saying that to generate interest then it lets make a deal time. The photo shows bad rust in the fender eyebrow and behind the front wheel where they all rust. If its bad there check the bottom of the doors, cowl and possible floor where it attaches to the cowl. Check the bottom of the barn doors in back, they are not reproduced and hard to find, also the sill below. Rear fender top and behind. Sheetmetal on the panels , except for doors and front clip do not interchange. This one is a relatively rare long panel, probably on a 3/4 or 1 ton chassis. Also look at the windshield frame, especially at the top eye brow and bottom. When panels show up for sale here in the last year or so they have been priced from 3K for good driver needing restored with a little rust to 7K for working truck with good 20' paint and interior.

By all means save that truck. If you don't want it, I'm sure someone will step up and take it off your hands.

Re: wiw: 1958 chevrolet apache 38 panel

thanks for the info and yes it is the 1 ton I am pretty sure............it is longer than others I have seen. It does need front fenders and door hinges for sure, but I think that the barn doors are ok. It's a sweet looking ride and I am going to try to get it if I can...........

oh, btw, there is also a real neat looking but pretty beat up 1958 Buick Estate wagon 4 DOOR HARDTOP sitting there that would be awesome, too.

i will look closer at the rust issues when i go back

From the looks, any issues it has can be fixed.

Re: wiw: 1958 chevrolet apache 38 panel

If there is anyone out there interested, I can probably go talk to the person who has it and see what they are asking for the panel before it's gone!!!!!!!!!

Small point but looking at the front fender emblem it is a 59.

Thanks, northerngmc, I did not know whether it was a 58 or 59, I wasn't sure how to tell.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Re: wiw: 1958 chevrolet apache 38 panel

I have not asked the person from the yard how much exact money they want for the truck but they have said that it would be what they paid for it plus a little extra.. I will try to find out exact if I can
