How to remove leafs?

Well I have been reading on the boards about dropping my rear more. Right now I have a flip and soon ill be adding a notch and possibly some shackles. But what I was wondering is how do you remove a leaf from the rear? Whats the process? I see a lot of talk about it but havent been able to find anything about how to go about it.

Re: How to remove leafs?

i replaced my leaf springs on my 77 about a month ago. the first thing my wife and i did was pre-soak all the bolts/nuts with wd-40. the leaf spring mounts on the hanger and mounts on the shackle. soak both of those like 2 days before you start. i jacked my truck up on jack stands. with the frame supported on the stands, i use the jack to support the weight of the diff. that way i could raise or lower it to get the tension off the bolts. after i did those two main bolts i focused on the u-bolts that hold the diff on the leafs. have those soaked down in advance too. although most people say to cut the bracket, i found it just as easy to unbolt it. good luck. taking it out was the easy part for us. installing the new one was a royal PITA.

Re: How to remove leafs?

no primetime, he is talking about removing a few out of the pack to lower it some more.
you need to jack the truck up and put jack stands under the frame, then put some jack stands under the axle tubes and take the u-bolts loose, I would put new u-bolts if it were me, jack up the rear a little to take the weight off the leafs, and raise the jack stands to hold it. now there is a pin running through the spring pack that has a round head and is the location pin for the rear that sets in the saddle block. clamp off the spring pack with two large c-clamp on each side of the pin as far out as you can and still clamp off all the springs. now take out the pin bolt and SLOWLY let the pressure off the clamps until the pressure is off the springs, remove the ones you want to take out then put it all back together with the clamps and put the pin back in...sometimes the bolt breaks and all you do is get a new bolt that is the same size and then round the head with a grinder or file, once you put it back in the pack. then put it all back together.

Re: How to remove leafs?

if you already have a flip kit all you need is some lowering blocks, i removed leafs from my truck and i'm not 100% happy on how it hooks up when i get on the throttle.
