tool for changing points on 55
I'm looking for the tool that is used to loosen the nut on the outside of the distributor. After removing the nut that holds the lead coming from the coil there is a nut that looks like this () but round and it has 2 slots. I have a tiny pair of needle nose pliers that I can get in the grooves and loosen but now I can get it to screw back in. I'm unable to hold the stud and push in on the nut. Is there a screwdriver type tool made for this application?

They did make a tool for it but I haven't seen one in years. you may have to find an old time ignition shop to help you out.

Take a cheap screwdriver and file or grind a notch in it to clear the stud. And dwcsr, you must be as old as I am if you remember that tool.

Is it a clutch head?? If so you can get drivers from the restoration places.

no, it's a circle with 2 slots cut out. The screwdiver trick I think will be the way to go. I'm sure I have a junk one with the tip broken off I can file down.

Now I'm curious need to dig out an old dist from the "box". I don't recall ever needing anything special to change the points and condenser on my 235 or old 283's.

Re: tool for changing points on 55
I was able to use a cotter pin, clipped and spread a little and then clanping a small pair of vise-grips over the center to make it strong and have a handle. It was still a little funky but worked.
Points set new cap, rotor, wires and plugs. I cleaned out the fuel pump, diaphram seems to be fine, time to see if I can get this thing running |
