Driveshaft worries

I bought my 86 with the trans blown and just installed another an have been driving it for maybe 3 days so far. My question is when I took out the driveshaft I noticed it as a pain in the arse to get out no room for it to slide up in the tranny. When I installed another trans same deal pain in the rump to reinstall to the point where I had to take the caps off the u joint an rotate yoke to get it in then reinstall the caps. Ive had a SBC in a s10 that had this problem but when you hit a bump you could tell there was a big problem with it hitting the trans. This truck seems fine when I drive it. Combo is 350/ 350 long shaft. Short bed truck. Any ideas?

what does the driveshaft measure from u joint to u joint or such?

I have an 84 out front had a th350 long tail and it's short bed. It had enough travel in it so if yours is the same length it should be fine, might just be something in the yoke itself or the output shaft. if yours is longer then yea it can bottom out and break stuff.

ok sounds good i got all mine wrote down.

I know mine was 61 inches overall from tip of the yoke to the end that wraps around the rear u joint, and 57 inches outside of one u joint to outside of the other NOT counting the yoke. Then it was 55.5 center to center I think.

I gota measure again Im comin up within a 1/2 inch. If I have measured correctly then mine is the wrong driveshaft.

yea a 1/2 inch is about all the play you get at the end, at least ours was, what part of the yoke that was sticking out of the trans was about 1/2 to 3/4 or so from the end of the trans to the flat part of the yoke behind the barrel.

You don't want it to bottom out that's for sure could tear up alot of things.

If it is too long take it to a driveshaft place(one that makes thier own) and tell them, they can cut off the yolk then cut off however much you want and then re weld on the yolk thus reusing your originall and saving about $200.
P.S. make sure it gets re-balanced after, the truck will probably feel alot smoother with a freshly balanced shaft
