Re: Brake Shoes soaked in Diffrential Oil
I would not risk it usually brake shoes run about $20 a set from a local chain parts store, no way I'd risk it. The fluid can swell shoes sometimes, or could make them crack or even stay embedded and come out later, too big of a risk IMO.

Re: Brake Shoes soaked in Diffrential Oil
i'm a bike mechanic, if i get a bike in the stand with contaminated disc pads i pull them out and hit them with a torch for a bit and then quench them in water. you can see all of the sh*t and corruption floating around in the quench water, and not to mention the burning oil smoke from the flame.
works pretty well.

Re: Brake Shoes soaked in Diffrential Oil
Normally anytime brake shoes get soaked in gear oil they are trash. It soaks in and becomes embedded in the shoe. Chances are the oil will break down the shoe anyhow.

Re: Brake Shoes soaked in Diffrential Oil
I don't know if yours would be that price or not might check around but every set I bought was like $20-25 on 73-87 trucks, and 80's cars including a 86 camaro 86 k10, 76c10 84 c10 92 s10 and 85 monte carlo. May check rock auto or amazon as well.
If it's the truck in your sig..... http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par.../N-ik38kZ8ko2c the last 2 on here... http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...51_10051_-1___ So it looks like $28-33 for yours.

Re: Brake Shoes soaked in Diffrential Oil
Hmm if its cheaper for me to send it to you then for a company I would do it. If you don't mind doing the number crunching, ill go to the auto store and ship them off. Pm me it interests you. I can't see me buying them and shipping it to you would cost as much as you posted. Let me know!

Re: Brake Shoes soaked in Diffrential Oil
Just a note about your oil leak. I have an 83 C20 3/4 ton and had differential oil contaminate my big rear brake shoes. I had new "wheel seals" installed (I call them axle seals) and the seals leaked a few months later. The first time the leak was not too bad, the second time it was massive, and I needed to replace those expensive rear shoes. The leak was caused by defective GM wheel seals. If you search the internet, you will find even late model floating axles on GM trucks with leaking seals. GM has since come out with a new 2 piece seal (works like a bearing with an inner and outer race), rather than the 1 piece rubber seal they have traditionally used. This fixed the leak problem. I don't know if your Dana 70 is a floating axle, but I would look into fixing the leak first - and get the new 2 piece style seal if you have a floating axle. All seemed to agree that soaked shoes could not be cleaned effectively - in my case, I found out because I had no brakes at all when trying to stop.

Re: Brake Shoes soaked in Diffrential Oil
A "full floating" axle is different from the typical "semi floating" axle that is found in rear wheel drive cars. The axle itself slides into the housing and bolts onto the hub. The axle does not support the weight, it merely provides the drive to the wheels.
A "semi floating" axle generally has an integral flange that the drum slips onto and then the wheel over that. The axle holds the weight of the truck. If the axle where to break out near the wheel end, the wheel would fall off.

Re: Brake Shoes soaked in Diffrential Oil
So, get the two piece wheel seal, if you have not already done so.
Here is one of many discussions on the web concerning the two piece rear wheel seal. I can't validate the GM part number (note the part number superseded below - GMPD shows them at $14.74 ea) , but you should research your model year truck on the web to be sure. The discussions seem to indicate that a lot of years (old and new) floating axles can use this two piece seal. The factory seal you want to use is the factory two piece seal that the truck is originally equipped with.. GM p/n 15007008. Do not use an aftermarket seal as they are a standard one piece seal and won't last on the machined surface that GM left on the axle tube where the seal rides. When you remove the hub, look on the axle tube where the seal rides VERY CLOSELY as like I mentioned the GM seal is a two piece design and the outer section actually spins in the inner section (doesn't spin on the actual axle tube). So it being a two piece design, the inner part will usually still be on the tube. Make sure you remove the inner part of the seal from the axle tube as it usually stays on the axle tube when you remove the hub. If you don't realize it, or don't know it's a two piece seal arrangement and you reinstall the hub with the new seal, it won't go all the way on since the inner piece of the original seal may still be stuck on the axle tube, damaging the new seal as soon as you push the hub on. Reply With Quote B&B, I had my brother check that # and it has been superseded by p/n 15823962. I am going to get them next week for 23.68 a piece. Thanks for the #. http://www.plowsite.com/showthread.php?p=495341 |
