Red face Can ya take it apart?

I have tried a few methods to remove the optical cable and clear lens from the the gear select pointer......No success
I want to paint it with other parts and was curious and tricks to getting the clear lens and optical cable out without break the housing.

Any ideas, Thanks in advance!

I don't think the clear part comes out, but the optical cable pops out.

I took the lens out of one but I don't remember how. I cut one down and made a short one out of it.

I went out and looked since I knew where one was. I just spread the housing apart a little and pushed the lens out the front.

Re: Can ya take it apart?

Now that I think about it, I had the lens out of mine as well. Not sure how I got it out either.

Re: Can ya take it apart?

Is that the early style or late? I have an early style (67-70) non-tilt, and the plastic part just slid out the bottom. Not to hijack, but how does the fiber optic cable actually work? I hooked mine up to the instrument panel, connected to a working bulb, but it does not light up. Anybody know how it works?

Think of it as a "light pipe". All a fiber optic cable does is direct light through it. If the fiber optic bundle isn't broke, it can't not work.

Maybe you need to shove the cable end closer to the bulb that lights it. Maybe the bulb is burnt out. Not much else can go wrong with it.

Re: Can ya take it apart?

Is there a way to check to bundle to see if it's broken? I know the bulb works, and it's pushed in as far as it will go on the indicator.

Re: Can ya take it apart?

O.K., again, sorry to hijack the thread, but does anyone have a picture of where the fiber optic cable connects on the power end? (Dash side)

Re: Can ya take it apart?

I don't have a pic, but there should be a dash light socket on the end that connects to the back of the instrument panel. It gets it's light source from there.

X2. What year is it? I just replaced mine with a new reproduction and had no trouble transferring the cable over. The lens came out pretty easily too.
