Do you windshield guru's recommend any sealant around a new windshield gasket? If so, what kind and where? If not, why?

I have installed new windshields in three 67-72 trucks and never sealed any of them, none of them have ever leaked. As long as you have a good clean surface around the windshield and use a new rubber you should have no problems.

I have a rusty surface and didnt use any sealer yet...its just temporarty (or thats what im planning)

I'm interested in this too...

Since my windshield leaks bad between the glass and the rubber seal. It only leaks in one corner though, I was planning on seeing if I can somehow get some sealant squeezed in there.

i've seen lots of guys pumping sillycone in to stop leaks only to finally figure out that the roof gutter was dried out and leakin or the cowl vent was leakin

I always use a little 3M Glazing and Bedding compound in the windshield and pinchweld grooves, for a little insurance.

X-2 Use a good gasket such as Precision brand. Board vendors sell them. I believe ECE has them also. Don't use silicone to seal a leak. If you need to seal a leak, go to an auto paint store and get a good product by 3-M or such.

Thanks guys, reason I ask, is when I replaced the windshield in the pickup, it has leaked ever since. Not much, but enough to be annoying. I didn't put any sealant on that one, just a new gasket and glass. With the Blazer I wanted to avoid any issues and with the windshield frame being pretty much new, I wasn't sure if I should even use sealant.

Turp can you explain what Glazing and Bedding is? I've heard of Glazing but don't know what either are. Thanks, Jeff.

I had this same type of leak, was able to seal it with some glass sealant I got at LMC. It's kind of like runny clear silicone.

If you use any type of sealant do not use silicone.. I would use some urethane. The stuff that is used for the glue in windshields. You can get this at autobody stores, or you auto parts stores. I know advance auto carries it, because thats where I boughy my last tube.
use with caution this stuff can make a mess if your not careful.

The product that I like to use is called "Bedding and Glazing Compound" by 3M. Part #08509. It comes in a caulking style tube. It stays soft and plyable, and doesn't dry up like urethane does.(I personally would not use urethane in this situation) If you have a leak, you can pull the rubber back and squeeze some in between the rubber and body, or the rubber and glass, without having to remove the windshield. If you look in the factory assembly manual, you will see how the factory installed them WITH some strip caulk in the pinchweld portion of the rubber. Hope this helps you out.

Is this stuff like a black, sticky tar like substance? If so, the glass guys put some on when they were trying to install. I took most of it off, but will put some back in if you think it will help seal.

That sounds about right. I'm sure there are other products out there, but I have used this stuff for a long time and am happy with the results.

I have never put any sealant on the windshield just new gasket and call it a day..

You can do that also with product i described, It's called windo-weld and is made by 3M . yes it comes in a caulk tube and is black.

But in all honesty, Use what ever you decide to just don't use silicone.
