Just an .02 cents worth observation from the Grandstands. .... Highest Rpms you can get and stay in Low gear for a while..... and have your Veh. super clean. you only get one chance to make a 1st impression.

Re: tips and tricks

traction, is a major key, is yours the sm465? if so id put the transfer case in 4lo and actually start off in second, and keep it in second. granny has a great ratio however u really cant get much speed out of it with a 6.57L and 4.57 axle. and your going to want some speed to throw dirt and get some momentum. plus 4l is roughly a 2:1 ratio so makes 2nd close to 1st again. i wouldnt try going into 3rd even if your going good, as these tranny dont like speed shifting and u have to shift fast and hard other wise u lose your momentum quick(not good), and might damage it. also make sure your clutch is in good order, and expect that to smell like hell for next day or so, as that will put extreme heat and slip on it, wouldnt be surprised u break a ujoint either so maybe bring an extra? make sure all fluids are good and full(axle tranny motor) good luck!!

Re: tips and tricks

if your clutch didn't like it in 2nd i'd say stick with 1st then, i just don't like using 1st to much because as bombproof the sm465 is they hate spinning super fast in granny both my buddies blew their granny out pulling. my dad always used second as that gear seemed to handle the hi revs better.
also check the rules as some require a kill switch on truck that mounts/attaches to the sled for emergencies.

Re: tips and tricks

Make sure to read the rules carefully.

If you want to pull around here you need drive shaft loops, u joint scatter guards, a tranny blanket/scatter shield, all kinds of crap a regular street truck doesn't have. I'd hate to see you pay all the money to enter and then not pass tech.

and with 4.56 axles, I'd put the tranny in 2nd and t-case in 4Lo and work with a steady and gentle foot. Also, check into what kind of ballast weight you ar allowed to use and how it can be mounted. If your truck tips the scales at 4300 pounds and the class limit is 6500, there is a real traction advantage to be gained by weighting the truck.
