Re: 66 sway bar
How about a bigger rear bar?
Helwig offers a 1 1/8" rear bar that is a very simple bolt in that works great. I have one on my '65 and it made a huge improvement (along with new rear springs). Part # 7401 http://www.hellwigproducts.com/produ...suv-sway-bars/ part # 7402 for leaf springs and stock ride height. Last edited by blackedoutharley; 07-28-2010 at 03:26 AM. |

Re: 66 sway bar
If you're ok with used parts and junkyard crawls, I've seen a lot of people talking about using the rear sway bar from an IROC-Z Camaro. I'm not 100% on the size of it though, but all of the reviews I've been reading are very positive for the roll and stability control. Installation also appears to be pretty straight forward. It is what I will be using on my '65 project.

Re: 66 sway bar
It's a 15/16 bar from IROC or any of the post IROC GENIII Z28's, it works great I have one on mine but you'll need a bigger bar on the front or it will cause your frame to flex as well as make you "tail-happy". I ended up putting a 1.25 or maybe its a 1.15 inch front bar off of a late 80's 1-Ton. Now the truck is perfectly balanced and is very, very tight in the corners. You can check out my build thread "The Never Ending Restore".
Your best bet is at pick-n-pull the bar and hardware will cost you around $35. BTW - I had some after market 1" bar on the rear for a number of years didn't even come close to tightening down my rear end the way the IROC bar did and wieghed twice as much. I don't know what kind of alloy they use on the factory bars but they're way lighter than aftermarket. Last edited by Russ65C10; 07-28-2010 at 11:39 AM. |

Re: 66 sway bar
when you say late 80's. you mean like 88 and later? i just pulled the front off a 87 1/2 ton and before i buy sway bar bushings i may as well get this bar and the bushings to fit it. i want to make this 66 handles as good as possible without spending a ton of money on suspension stuff.

No pre-88. 1987 is the last year you can use.

Re: 66 sway bar
The IROC bar is 15/16" while the regular camero bar is 7/8". I have heard rumor that all post IROC camero's got the IROC bar but don't quote me on that.
Here's a article on how to do it. http://www.low69cst.freeservers.com/CamaroBar.htm |

Re: 66 sway bar
also thru my searches. it shows the rear bars to interchange all the way to 02. would be cool if someone had a late 80's bar and late 90's to check if they are same pattern

Re: 66 sway bar
From what i know, early Iroc's got the bigger sway bar. After 87 all Z28's got the Iroc package. There are 3 Iroc suspension packages thought. What they are other than stiffer springs or shocks I do not know. I do know that 1le or the police package 4bc
had a completely different suspension package. Never have seen one of those up close. the 2 that I've had my hands on are 15/16 in the rear. Also I do belive that trans-ams and foumlas my be all 15/16 not sure though. |

That is exactly what I have dug up from my local pick n pull. Cost me $50 for both bars, and about an hour and a half's worth of looking and pulling. New end links and new bushings, and it is said to be one of the best combos available for our trucks. I'm excited to feel it on the road. Iroc87: nice IROC, really makes me miss the black '89 I sold a few years ago. Sure was a great car! Last edited by fryer1979; 08-20-2010 at 02:48 AM. |
