front end rattle?

My 87 gmc has this rattle coming from the front shocks ALL THE TIME. I tracked it down to the upper mounting studs coming loose. This has happened before and I re-tightened them about 6 months ago and it came back in just a few weeks and i just havent messed with it again.
Now the shocks are 4 years old anyway and have a lifetime replacement and so i'm going to swap them out this week anyway but...the new ones come with new studs and washers of course but no lock washers? only flat ones. just like whats on there now.
should i buy additional lock washers to fix it? are the nuts supposed to be lock nuts?

Re: front end rattle?

Make sure the hole has not been enlarged by the bolt flopping around in it. I hear it happens a lot, and leaves you with a situation where they will always rattle around. I on't remember if mine had any kind of lockwashers on them, but you could always use loctite on them if it is only a problem with the nuts loosening up.

POINTLESS EDIT: I have relatives in League City...

Re: front end rattle?

Mine had wallowed out. I plan on having them welded up in the future but funds dont allow right now, and the truck is only driven around town for the most part now.

I get by using some large (like 1" diameter) convex washers. They look like bowls almost. You put them on both sides and like a dumbbell shape and it keeps the shocks from rattling around and making the holes larger.
