temporary hardtop storage

I was going to borrow my neighbor's utility trailer to get the top from under my lift..... need the lift to work on the Jimmy. If I used his trailer I'd have to put the top somewhere by myself to return the trailer. I had an idea and did some measuring. My little pop-up camper BARELY squeezed between the posts on my lift, and there was 1/2" clearance between the top and the trailer. I put a strip of 1/2" plywood under edges of the the top to protect the trailer. I pretty much use the pop-up once a year for Daytona in Feb., my boys borrow it sometimes-- they can lift it off and put it on sawhorses. Gives me some time to figure out how to hang it from the overhead.
While I was backing and lifting I let the Jimmy idle for an hr. or so and when I got it up on the lift it was peeing a stream of coolant up near the front. I was too hot n sweaty to mess with it. It has one of those cheesy chrome water outlets on the intake that looked pretty cruddy, hope it's leaking rather than the water pump or radiator.

Re: temporary hardtop storage

It's best to store them flat like that. I had mine leaning on the side of the house for like 3years and wen I went to move into anohter home I put the top on and it was warped bad enough for me to give it away after the move...hehehe

Re: temporary hardtop storage

I reused my other top lifting contraption and turned it into a dolly for my top. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=407377

I think I am going to end up welding some attachment points on my lift to hooks the straps too to make the job even easier. Taking these tops off with a lift is way less stressful then doing it any other way.

Re: temporary hardtop storage

I know these tops are heavy, but you might want to strap it down if it's outside. Storms and wind have a strange way of reminding us of the damage they can do, looks like a good idea!

Re: temporary hardtop storage

I was thinking of storing mine outside on the side of the house sitting on top of either 4 tires or some saw horses what do you guys think? Hovering in the garage ain't a option for me

Re: temporary hardtop storage

Mine is similar to hotrodhomi's but a little more simple. I think it was about $12 total. I have for eyebolts in the rafters, two 2x4's and 4 lengths of rope. I drilled a hole in the corners of each 2x4 and ran the rope though them. I tied a large knot in the end of the rope. Unbolt the top and put the 2x2 between the bed and the top (I put holes in the 2x4's to correspond with the top bolt holes and I use that to keep it centered.) The other end of the rope goes up through the eye bolts and hangs down. I tie a big loop that hangs about 12" above the ends of the 2x4s. I then just lift each corner and put the loop over the end of the 2x4. It raises the top off the bed and I drive out from under it.

I don't have a tall ceiling in my garage, but it is high enough that i can park under the suspended top. It's easy enough that I can remove and replace the top by myself.

You can barely see it hanging in the garage in this picture.

Re: temporary hardtop storage

I seen that on another post looks good and simple but unfortunately my truck don't fit in my garage plus my garage houses my 57 truck and 51 fleetline and has the sheetrock ceiling that's why I was hoping to put it outside the top that is

Re: temporary hardtop storage

The weather won't hurt it any worse sittin' outside on or off the Blazer. Shouldn't warp the bottom if it's properly supported.
A member of our car club has a Blazer top in her yard that has been sitting on the ground for 15+ years. Haven't seen it yet but she told me I can have it when she gets some trailers and stuff out of the way. Might be interesting to see what lives UNDER it

Re: temporary hardtop storage

unfortuantly i wont be able to store it on the side of my house as i planned the side of my house is 5 feet hide and the top is 6 feet wide. would it be bad if i laid it against the house for a 3-4 months or am i risking it warping. i dont want to have to get a mini storage just for my top and i;m itching to take it off. any ideas guys? thanx

Re: temporary hardtop storage

You could probably build a simple 2x4 frame and bolt the top to it to prevent it from warping. Then I think you could lean it up against a wall. Just make sure it is secured so it doesn't fly away if a wind storm comes up.
