Header opinions

Hi All, I am close to getting my 350 rebuilt and will be dropping it in my frame soon. I'm ready to buy a set of headers and thought I would get everyone's thoughts on their headers, brand, quality, etc. I'll probably go with coated ones. Also vendors with best prices. Thanks, Danny

Yeap, used to bend them old fiberglass poles. That was an old handle I had. Sure wished I could change to something new on the forum. I just wasn't thinking at the time. Did not realize how I would become hooked on these trucks, but I'm in deep now. And lovin' it. Where did you guys buy your headers.

Does Wes or any other vendor on the forum sell them?

Thanks,

Danny

PS Has anyone ever got their handle changed on the forum? If so how?

I would spend the money up front and go with the hooker super comps, coated. Just my 2 cents worth

Depends on if your truck in auto or manual. I have the clutch linkage that gets in the way of most headers. I had to get some hedders from headman. Hedman at the time was the only ones that had hedders that cleared the linkage.

Mine were on the truck when i got it.
I agree though, if you have the cash, you may as well get the best you can, otherwise it'll nip you in the rear when you least expect it. (or least able to spend the $$)

I'm using $79 summit headers on mine with copper flange gaskets and aluminum collector gaskets. 10,000 miles and I havent had to retorque and I havent had any leaks. Coated headers would be nice but I cant see spending another $300 to get a set.

You can get coated Dynomax headers for $230-$250 or so at Summit...

I'm still debating long tubes vs Chevelle shorties. My truck is lowered, and I don't want to have the exhaust any lower than where it's at now (which is tucked up against the frame)

Thumbs up

I'VE RUN HOOKER SUPER COMP.s & DOUG THORLY TRI-YS ON THE LAST TWO TRUCKS THAT I'VE BUILT , & HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH BOTH. WHEN I THINK BACK OVER THE LAST 30 YEARS THAT I'VE BEEN RUNNING HEADERS, ALL THE PROBLEMS THAT I'VE HAD WITH THEM HAVE BEEN WITH CHEAPY HEADERS. SPEND THE MONEY & BUY GOOD ONES (YOU WON'T BE SORRY)

I'm running a set of non-coated Hedman headers on mine. They were pretty cheap ($103 from Summit), and have been on the truck for 2 years and 16k miles. I have had to replace the el-cheapo gaskets i used once, but no other real problems with them. But the passenger side collector kinda points up at the cab. Looks a little weird, but they work just fine.

Another vote for dynomax jet hot coated from summit. I think I paid like $220 for them.

Hey, I have my old headers if you want them

Cheap Headers

I bought a set of Flo-Tech headers in '97 from Supershops (before they bellied up) for $69 They've been on the truck for over 5 years, and 90,000 miles. The shop that did my exhaust did a really nice job of suspending it. (2.5" Turbo mufflers with side dumps). There is no weight bearing on the headers themselves, and the exhaust moves pretty freely with the motor torqueing around. I beleive this has a great deal to do with everything lasting as long as it has. Rust is not a big deal here in the middle of the desert either. Eventually of course they will wear out, but I will happily buy another set. Oh yeah, and the clutch linkage clears fine.

Thanks for all the responses. Where else can you get this type of feedback. I hit the Decateur, TX swap meet today and didn't score on a set of headers, but it was a good meet. Guess I'll pull out the catalogs and use everyones advice and see what I can come up with. Thanks again, Danny

If the 4x4 headers will clear the 2x crossmember, they should have more ground clearance. I have a set I pulled off my Jimmy. The little flange for the bolt on collector leaked, so they will need to have slip on collectors or be welded to the pipes. They are Heddmans and clear the manual trans linkage. I'll take $40 plus shipping for them. Also, it looks like a set of 68-82 Corvette headers will work well in these trucks and provide tons of ground clearance.
