Truck broke today.....I'm bummed :(
Drove the truck to Charlotte today to show to a board member who was interested in buying. Cruising down the interstate, 3 miles from my destination when suddenly I'm smelling oil, then a slight jerk, then clackety-clack-clack and shakey-shake-shake. Check the oil pressure while I'm throwing it in neutral, still good. Slowly drive to a safe place to pull off, shut off truck, look under hood, and find the hose to the old-style breather on the back of the block has popped off and there is oil on the engine. Pop the hose back on, limp to my destination, check oil - it's low. Had to have it towed; it sounded bad. Checked the flywheel/torque converter connection and it was solid. So...I'm thinking maybe the breather threw out oil starving the pump and killing a couple of rod bearings although I'm a little puzzled at how little oil I saw and why my pressure stayed good. I'll know more tomorrow.

Re: Truck broke today.....I'm bummed :(
your oil pressure can still read good even if your very low on oil (dont ask me how i know :-( ). You could have been burning/ blow bye and leaking oil for a while now and now even think to check it cause its so little. Wish you the best of luck! Please be cheap to fix!!!!!!!

You're right, 68 c10, except I checked the oil before I left along with all the other fluids unless there was some major blow-by on the Interstate. To top it off, the A/C in my house broke this evening. 10:00 pm and it's 87 degrees outside. Gonna be a long night.

You must have followed me around today. My 72 crapped out waited 1.5 hrs in the 100 degree heat for a jump. My house ac died also.

Re: Truck broke today.....I'm bummed :(
You took the words out of my mouth... I replaced my headers (chronic exhaust leaks, too hot in engine bay) with exhaust manifolds last week (1), that led a power steering leak and repairing that (2), then needing to re-route my transmission cooler lines (3) - all within the week. Overall project went about $600 over budget. Oh, forgot... turned out the heat (from headers) fried the spark plug wire boots (I guess that makes 4), so I went ahead and ordered $120 spark plug wires (came in today actually, pretty sweet - overkill, but nice).
Hopefully it's not too serious and you can get it fixed. I guess one way to look at it is that it's our hobby, with some passion thrown in... and brings us piece of mind (these trucks are a nice escape from the other stresses in life). Good luck on the repair.

Re: Truck broke today.....I'm bummed :(
Thanks, rat bastid, for pointing that out. You are correct so I'll blame you. Just found out today that our bathroom shower has been leaking water under the tile and into the sub-floor for who knows how long. Major water damage. So there's #3. Don't want no more. A/C's fixed
No word on the truck yet. My mechanic's backed up. Hope I'll know something by tomorrow. gc, thanks for the offer, man. That's awful nice of you. I'll holler at you if I need you. You don't do carpentry, do you?

Sorry to hear about the truck. Your headed down the road looking for a payday and you get a bill instead. Things will get better, just tell yourself that.
