Stock vs.Tach Dash Swap
Purchased a '79 Tach cluster and want to replace my stock one in my '78 which has the fuel gauge in place of Tach and a clock on the side. My question is how do I install with what I have and what do I need to hook the tach, fuel gauge and in place of clock?
Thx! |

Re: Stock vs.Tach Dash Swap
It's a bolt in swap. You'll need to run 3 leads off the tach: one to ignition +, one to the HEI, and one for ground.

Quote:
Your connector can have a total of 18 leads in it numbering 1-9, top to bottom on the left side AS YOU LOOK AT THE HARNESS and 10-18, bottom to top on the right side of the connector AS YOU LOOK AT THE HARNESS. On the back of the cluster, AS YOU ARE LOOKING AT IT, the numbering is 1-9, top to bottom on the right and 10-18 bottom to top on the left. Make a chart for yourself of the backs of the 2 clusters by tracing the leads from each and every terminal back to the plug in on the cluster assemblies. Compare them and carefully one lead at a time move the pins around in your connector on the harness by using a small flat tip jewelers screwdriver (think small enough for the screws in a pair of eyeglasses) Carefully insert the screwdriver under the selected pin to depress the locking tab for the pin in the connector then slide it out the back. You may have to carefully bend the locking tab back out a bit before re-inserting the pin back into the connector in it's new location. Below is a pic of the chart I made of my cluster to use as an example. Please note that my squarebody is a 1990 V2500 Suburban with an electronic speedo unlike yours with the cable drive.
