Quick question about axles n' hubs and 3/4 ton stuff

Hey guys and gals, I'm looking at picking up a 78 GMC K20 (for my axle swapping project..) it has a 14bolt FF rear and Dana 44 front, im not sure though if this would still be a full time 4wd truck or not? I have a notion to think that 79 was when they stopped using NP203s but im not sure.. Is it true that one can just put locking hubs on an axle that came out of a fulltime system? (going into my truck with a part time setup) Ive scanned the forum about this too...(todd this is what happened to the frankentruck right?) The other thing I heard was that Dana 44s use the same locking hubs as the GM 10 bolts (which would be great cause i could rob them out of my stock front axle)

I am not sure about the hub from 3/4 to a 10 bolt, but that's the set up I got in one of my rigs. it's an all time 4x4 but got locking hubs. The drive shaft still spins but with the hubs unlocked the tires do not move.

Re: Quick question about axles n' hubs and 3/4 ton stuff

I thought they were using 10 bolt front ends by '78? If the truck originally had an automatic tranny then it had a full time t-case; and yes you can buy a part-time conversion kit. I'm not sure about the interchangeablility of the D44 and 10 bolt hub locks. I DO know that they were using 10 bolt front ends in '79 because that's where I got the axles for my swap on my V20.

Yo! PM me!
FRANKENTRUCK has Dana 44 front with Warn locking hubs. Rear is 5560 lb rated full floating. Both are 4.11:1.
FRANKENTRUCK started as a '78 with an NP203, corporate, full-time 4x4, front axle and rear rated at about 4600 lbs. Got my axles from the '73 flatbed and went with an ORD NP205 twin-stick.
Glad I saw your post!
Todd.
