Tranny Question

I have an 86 C20 with a 350 c.i. and a 4 speed manual transmission. I want to switch to a automatic possibly a 700R or whatever would work. Do they the 700R where it can be a floor shift? I figure I wouldn't have to change the steering column and it would be a little different. I new to this and honestly don't know. Thanks for your help.

Re: Tranny Question

You can do the swap, it's all straight forward, and just get a floor mounted shifter from the after market. I went the way of a custom shifter, but only cause it was handy. I got a 68 camaro floor shifter in my truck. You can get almost anything to work as long as you got the time and skills/ or friends/ or money haha.

Re: Tranny Question

Anyone have any idea what a good used 700r4 would cost? Or at least what a fair price is?

Re: Tranny Question

I wouldnt reccomend a used 700r4. Your best bet is to have one built locally. IN stock form they suck if you plan to beat on it at all. They arent the strongest tranny around and cant handle much towing or abuse. There are some needed upgrades if you want it to live.

Thanks......Any decent tranny that will pretty much bolt-n-go from a 4 speed to auto? My engine is a 350 and I just want to go from a stick to auto preferably a floor shift. Also I'm figuring it would make sense to change the U-joints at the same time. Anyone know if I can use the old driveshaft or do I need one from the automatic due to a lenth difference or something?

Re: Tranny Question

You have an SM465, the auto uses a different yoke as well as being longer.

Re: Tranny Question

Just don't tow with that 700R4 in overdrive, you'll smoke it.

Re: Tranny Question

I am running my 84 GMC and my son's 86 Silverado with 700 R4 trannys. I used the B&M Truck Megashifters for the floor shifter for these trannies.
