SB 350/auto: Does anything hold the back of the motor up?
I'm ready to drop my new SB 350 into my bodyless frame. Without support from the auto transmision and its crossmember, I can see that the rear of the motor will be unsupported and will droop and break the motor mounts. Have I missed something?
The truck is a 68 2wd originaly with a 250/3spd manual. I've got a new TH350, auto crossmember from early classic, and small block motor towers. I was going to drop the motor in to the frame today without the trans mounted until I realized all this. thanks. Last edited by MedicineMan; 08-11-2010 at 01:33 AM. Reason: misspell |

You'll need to support the engine some how (jack stand with a block of wood under the oil pan) until you get the trans. and crossmember installed.

I ran a 2x4 across the frame and drilled 2 holes and bolted through the engine/tranny mounting holes while I was checking out something on my LS install. Worked for me.

Lower the engine in the compartment and hold it where you want it. Then use a floor jack hold the rear up.
I use a small wood block with a shop cloth on top to hold mine. This way I can lower or raise the engine from the rear as needed when installing the transmission. |

^^^^
I'd be inclined to support the engine PDQ. If something sags just a little you may be shopping for a new dizzy.

Thanks guys! I got the Motor in, and the manual trans crossmember swaped out for the Automatic trans crossmember, not bolted in yet. Proped the motor up on a jackstand like you all said. Tranny can go in tomorrow then I'll get the body parts to the painter!
