I know there has been some discussion about what pickups got what antenna. Some seem to have gotten the 1 piece stainless steel whip, while others got the telescopic (extendable, adjustable) type. Was there ever any agreement as which type was available on a '72? I presently have the telescopic type, but it is stiff and has cracked the cowl a little bit where it mounts. I don't think the whip type would be so hard on the metal due to their flexibility. Also thought there was a theory that original equipment AM/FM pickups got the whip, while AM pickups got the telescopic type. If someone has a picture of a whip type that is known to be original, could you please post or eamail it?

Here is what I know...

If the truck had a radio of any kind and was designed for a camper, then it had the telescoping type. (so the camper bed would clear when the antenna was lowered)

My '72 has an original telescoping. The truck originally had an AM/FM radio.

I think the fixed mast was primarily used for the AM/FM's only

I am in need of a telescopic one in working condition, do they reproduce them?

Still looking for a photo of a whip type. A board member has one, but not positive that it is not an aftermarket. All the pickups I've seen have the telescoping type so I don't know what the whip type is supposed to look at. He doesn't have a photo of the one that he is selling so I can't post it. Anyone?

Do you mean the spring mounted one? My Jimmy has the spring mounted one. AND it is telescoping. My dad bought the truck circa 1977, so I THINK it is factory, because it was on it then. It was a factory AM/FM truck. It also appeared to have factory cruise, but it is NOT on the glovebox. Let me know if this is the one you want a pic of, and I'll shoot it. LMC has both fixed and telescoping regular antennas.

In my opinion the telescopic is JUNK! It is chrome, so it flakes and rusts. The whip is stainless. The car wash will snap your tele off, even if it is down. The whip---just whips! Buy the real truck whip with the correct large base and taper that fits our cowl. The auto parts antennas don't fit and look cheap. The repros are excellent, but back ordered everywhere because they used some real GM parts---now GM is out/discontinued.

The anttena I have on my truck is a stainless telescopic without a spring base. Do they make an exact repro of that one?

I am pretty sure that this is an origional antenna. When we took the Burb apart, it looked like the antenna had not been removed before and the zinc diecast parts appear to have the deterioration that would be expected. Sorry about the pic, I tried different backgrounds and it does not want to show up.

I have a '68 with AM radio. It has the whip antenna which I'm pretty sure is stock. I'll see if I can get a pic.

The "real" truck whip is what I am looking for, but don't knw what it looks like. Thanks JimK4x4 for taking the photo. Mike C-to my knowledge, there was never a factory antenna that had a spring on it. If someone has a photo that shows better detail of the base, I would still appreciate another photo. Thanks again to all who have responded so far.

I haven't seen any others, but for all intents and purposes, my truck was "new" when we got it, but you never know. The spring antenna is too cool. I wish I could find one to replace the broken antenna on my pickup.
