Building a Sleeping Platform in a long bed

so, I've been doing some searching on how to build a sleeping platform for the bed of my 72, for when I have my topper on.

I found lots of good pictures/designs on some Toyota forums...

Has anyone here made one?, and if so, do you have pics?

Re: Building a Sleeping Platform in a long bed

This is what I've done to mine. Marine grade carpet, the topper is also lined with carpet, and there is a platform at the front. The camper is sealed to the cab, so there are no windows to deal with. The only thing left that I need to do is to add the blazer tailgate rubber strip so that it seals the tailgate to the truck. To top it off, a full size mattress fits snug in there.

Re: Building a Sleeping Platform in a long bed

I just moved and my full size (spring) mattress fit between the bedsides of my stepside. Was just barely squeezed to fit. So a fullsize air mattress should work fine

Re: Building a Sleeping Platform in a long bed

i dont have any pics but i have seen a toyota tacoma on craigslist that a guy built sleeping quarters in. it looked like he put a piece of ply wood on top of the wheel wells and made pull out drawer on the bottom between the wheel wells. it looked real nice, it was covered in some thin auto carpet

Re: Building a Sleeping Platform in a long bed

Nightmare that looks like you took it out of the back of my Dads truck the only differance was he had a false floor about 4" deep to keep his fishing rods in and the back section behind the wheel wells opened towards the gate..thats where he kept his colman stove on the other side was common spices and good old frying pan, his plates and utencils... up front was cloths and other misalanious stuff...He has been all over the country with his said it was one of his best set ups since when the gate was up everthing was locked up and it did look like there was anything worth stealing...I even remeber putting a spare battery up front with a ford seliniod to disconect it when the truck was shut off that ran a radio and dome light for him.....

Re: Building a Sleeping Platform in a long bed

Many years ago when I was in high school I had a '74 Datsun P/U. I built something very similar to what Nightmare has, only there was rails along the side boxes and the bottom piece could be on the bed floor or slide it out and back in on the rails, then it was one platform as wide as the bed.

I thought about the tent ones, but I'm trying to get away from using a tent...
I'll have my topper/shell on. looking at things like these... the second one is a newer GMC....

so I can stow my camping gear, etc... in the platform....

here's my shell....

Nothing at the moment. I usually store the camping gear or fishing equipment in there.

Exactly! I like it. After I get that seal placed on there, I would like to add some low voltage LED lights to be able to see back there better. It does have the third brake light (which also has the interior light) so it shouldn't be that difficult to do.
