The difference has to do with the doors and the bolt angle into the threaded holes in the back of the handles. On a 67 door there is a reenforcement plate where the handle bolts that neccessitates this. You can tell a 67 door by the shape of the access holes on the inner skin to reach the handle bolts. On a 67 door, they are round, on 68-72 doors, these holes are an upside down teardrop shape.
