Kits like that one, and the comperable Summit kit, seem to work pretty well. All of the cars I have seen them installed into turned out nicely, the guys installing them said they were relatively easy and the instructions were well laid out. Of course painless is nice, but you pay a lot more for a name. Truthfully, from what I've seen of the painless kits there isn't much difference there to justify the almost doubled price. I'll be using a kit similar to the Jegs or Summit kits in mine (if not one of those two).

X2

I wired my (2) hot rods (Model T and Model A) using Painless Wiring kits and they worked out great. Back when I bought those kits Painless and Ron Francis were the "class acts" in wiring. But their pricing is out of line now, IMHO. Nowadays Painless wants $500.00 for a 12 circuit system! The Rebel Wire kit linked above http://www.rebel-wire.com/wirekits.shtml has a 9 + 3 kit for $150.00.

Rebel even has a remote mount fuse box kit for less than $250.00. I am wanting to mount the fuse box in my center console for ease of accessibility. Whoever came up with the concept of mounting the fuse box on the firwall was a sadist, or a contortionist, or both!

Re: wiring harness anyone used this

If someone rewires their truck, PLEASE PLEASE do a detailed post on it. I need to rewire mine and would like to save some headaches if possible. Let us know what you likes and didn't like and any trouble areas you had. Thanks, Jeff.

Re: wiring harness anyone used this

I think its all a question of how much time you want to spend and how much wire splicing you want to do. The less money you spend initially, the more work and splicing of old wiring and connectors to new wiring there will be.

You can spend over $1000 on new replacement harnesses and have it done in a few hours or $150 and who knows how much time.

The question becomes what's time worth, and what's the competence level or wiring skills of the installer. Then if it doesn't work, what troubleshooting skills does the installer have?

There's a video on youtube I think about the AAW classic update kit, which may be a good compromise. I haven't used their product so I'm just saying its out there...

I agree with 72lb4x4. If you look at these kits closer:

The Summit "Painless" kit is a 12 circuit specifically made for a Chevy/GMC Truck. Look at the photos in the above links. You will see this kit has items such as the dash lights, etc. pre-terminated so it's more of a plug and play harness. $414.95

The Jegs kit is a 18 circuit universal that you cut to fit. But it appears it has all the terminations you will need for custom gauges. It will not have the plugs you need if you are using a stock factory gauge cluster. $259.99

If there are modifications to your truck, such as different gauges, then the universal kit makes sense.

I hope this helps.

Like stated above it is a an application specific kit engineered for your truck. The wires are all marked as to exactly where they go (trust me, this helps a lot!).

It is a matter of convenience. And sometimes convenience is more costly (and worth it!).

Personally I prefer to have the ability to cut and trim mine to fit. Just like I always buy spark plug wires, the "pre-fit" ones always seem to have too much excess wiring that ends up being a little tacky. It is just my opinion, but I do like doing a lot of the fit and finish stuff myself, I belive it comes out looking a lot nicer. I am fairly experienced with automotive electronics so I normally don't get too intimidated by it, and actually I enjoy it more often than not.

TheDark1: I will be doing a complete re-wire of my '65, and will post pics and info in my build thread. It may just be a while before I get that far.
