E85 Rocks
Just got my truck switched over to E85 and been out testing a bit and let me tell you I wish I had done it long ago. I had Kevin @ CSU do me up a set of metering blocks for my blow through carb he built for me 4 yrs ago. I spent a whole hour changing them out and about 15 mins of tweaking idle mix screws and it runs like a champ. Drove around a bunch and it doesn't really even use much more fuel than with the pump gas. Just bought 19 gallons today for 2.059. Can't beat that.
We'll see what the track times say next weekend. Tuneup is kinda fat right now but even so it has more power than on 110 race gas at the same boost without a doubt. The cooling effect it has on the intake charge is great. Driving around town with the engine at 180 the intake is cold to the touch and dripping condensation. Also converted my buddy's 454 in his 80 shortbox to run on the corn gas. It's a 10:1 engine with AFR 265 ovals and a comp XR280 roller cam. Made 602hp@6200 on the dyno and ran 11.60@116 with it's tight nitrous converter. With a 150 hit of juice it went 10.70@127 with a nos cheater plate with a fat fuel jet and some tire spin off the line. It's an absolute no maintenace combo and cheap to drive. If you have a consistent source of this stuff it's well worth the time to switch .

Very cool. If my truck (or our '00 formula) ever become drag toys, e-85 will be the fuel of choice.

I run 40 psi on my eclipse in my sig on E85 with a 100 shot to bring it up on the converter. E85 is very hard to beat, just change your oil a little more often. Amsoil has some oil that is alcohol friendly thats lasts longer. I plan on twin turboing my BBC in a year or so and running E85!

Am building a 454 with 12.5 compression and am considering a E-85 Dominator 1050. Anything special I need to consider??

Problem is .......a motor with 12.5/1 compression will not run on 87 Octane, so my choices are 110 Race Fuel at $5.89/gal , Alocohol which uses at least 2x more or E-85 @ 2.89/gal and use roughly 30% more so it turns out to be about 3.75/gal.
What are your guys experience, any special timing, plugs, etc. needed or suggested?

You can use a colder plug with the e85 as the plugs stay clean and don't foul. This will help prevent preignition which can happen easier with e85. You may be able to add more timing but it depends on the engine. My buddy's big block didn't want any more timing when we switched over. His engine also only needed 20% more on the jetting. Driving around the fuel usage increase is hardly noticeable.

I again have thought about e85 but the cost to switch and add more compression not really cost effective for me.

You will need to be sure that your entire fuel system is compatable with alcohol. From the tank to the carb.

Does it take a larger fuel pump (more gpm)? or just a alcohol compatible one?

methanol injection is another option as well. You can run the regular pump gas and spray some meth to cool the charge and raise the octane rating. It's cheap and you don't use that much.

e85 sucks, for 2 reasons
1) it isn't sold everywhere.. (none here) 2) when the government stops subudies for ethnol.. your gonna be paying through the nose. and it'll get dropped from most pump stations.. good luck Last edited by stich626; 11-19-2010 at 08:29 AM. |

I have thought about the "what if" no E85 is available or the price jumps, wouldn't make much sense then I agree.
Bottom line is either Alcohol or Ethonal seem to be the cheapest bang for your buck vs 110 or 114 octane race fuel
