Heater Hose

I am installing the heater hoses on the 62 and it has the basic heater in the cab. The 3/4 line goes to the connection on the manifold and the 5/8 hose should go into the water pump. But there is no inlet on the bottom of my water pump but there is one on the top.

Does it make any difference where the 5/8 hose goes into the water pump. It is a Chev 350 about 1979.

Thanks

Re: Heater Hose

im not sure on the 62 but in my 65 the motor is out of a 78, the one off the water pump went to the left outlet on the heater core, the one on the intake went to the right, i really dont think there is any difference on which goes to what on the heater core though

Re: Heater Hose

Mine is hooked up just the opposite, smaller hose to the manifold and larger hose to the pump. I don't have a ready recollection of where I read it, but I'm pretty sure that's the layout defined in a factory service manual. Here's a shot of the hose routing:

Also the heater valve should be in the line to the maniold, since that is the one pushing the hot coolant out to the heater. Mine happens to be located near the frame in front of the engine to clean up the firewall.

Re: Heater Hose

Mark, my engine is a little different in that the alternator is on the left but I have the reciprocating heater and if I understand what you have done is the top 3/4 line goes to the top of the water pump so it is return. The smaller 5/8 line goes to the manifold and is the hot water supply.

I looked in the book I have and it does not show the hoses at all just the interior.

Re: Heater Hose

Yes that is correct, return line on top and supply side on the bottom. I also have the recirculating or "economy" heater in my truck. Since it's a closed circuit, it doesn't seem like it would really make much difference which direction it flows, but I found a diagram long ago that showed this layout. The only thing the 1960 Shop Manual states is "CAUTION: Note the hose placement. Use care not to reverse their position". There are no photos or schematics for the hose routing.

And to answer your original question directly it doesn't matter where on the water pump the heater hose connects, it's just a matter of where the boss was located on the particular casting.
