What is a fair price for this 1978 SWB Pickup?

Im looking at buying this truck here locally and looking for opinions on what you think is a fair price here before I make an offer. What do you think?

Well it looks to be in good shape.. around here in Oregon trucks like that can go for 2500 but it all depends if it runs good and shifts fine

It would probably sell for around 3K here. Only think that concerns me is the front bumper alignment, looks like the truck has taken a light hit in the past.

Around 3k here, but again the front bumper is a bit off, and I just noticed it's a 1/2 ton so I would say a fair price would still be around $2500 to 3K.

I sold mine a couple of years ago and got 5500.00 It is similar.

Price is always dependent on condition.
On these old trucks, parts just wear out - and replacement parts are not always cheap. All of the trim parts cost more $$ than you would think, and some parts are just no longer available.
In Tucson, any running truck that will pass emissions and not blowing smoke or leaking a lot of fluids will get $2K, assuming no rust or big body dents or totally shot interior -southwest truck. Basically, an intact truck, driver quality still needing some cosmetic work, but everything works.
I see some rust starting to show on this truck - door bottoms.
So, I would go to the bank and get twenty $100 bills. The I would change into old, semi-dirty clothes and borrow a beater to drive if you don't have one. I would put 15 of those bills in one pocket, and 5 bills in my other pocket. Once I had a mechanic check out the vehicle, I would pull out $1500from one pocket and tell the seller: "I got 15 hunerd I can giveya rite now, if you'll take it." If he doesn't bite, walk away - unless he says: "Well, how about $1800?" Then you say - I'll be right back - I gotta go ask the Mrs. for another $300, but we gotta deal." Then drive away and come back in 30 minutes with $1800 in one pocket this time. Use the other $200 to pay for the water pump that will blow when you are driving it home.

I have to agree here. It looks to have been hit, or hit something to bend that front bumper like that. So, the frame may, or may not be bent. You have to take that into consideration. I'd be asking what happened there. If you have some frame damage, it will cost to repair. It also looks like it may have some bondo in the bedside behind the rear tire and up front in the fender behind the tire. I'd check it out real good in the normal known rust areas on these trucks and price it accordingly. A truck like that might bring $1200 to $1800 around here in that condition, but no more than that. Personally, I'd quit trying at $1500. Start at $1200 and see what he says. You can always go up. ....Joe

I think the offers listed above will not buy that truck. the shipping will add a little to it also so that should be figured in. When you said you were looking to buy this truck locally , I thought you meant in the DFW area. That truck is nice , especially considering the area it is in . Most up there are rusted out but a nice AZ truck up north is a rare find .Did you ever sell the Red truck that was Jonboys? I noticed that it was listed on Ebay 3 or 4 times.

Wow, you guys are tuff! I paid $3750 for the truck- cost me $750 to get it shipped from Pheonix to here. put new steering box and new bushings in the front end $1300. put in new radio with mp3 jack $125. Running boards and vent visors cost me about $275. and then the wheels and tires cost me $800. grill, rear tailgate band, gauge cover, other misc trim and pieces cost me over $315. this not including all the other pieces i have bought for it and not used ($1000- but are not included) so needless to say here guys $1500 is not going to buy it. I put what i thought was a fair price on it- i am not looking to make any money on it- i have enjoyed the truck and still enjoy the truck- i am not desperate for money nor do i have to sell it- You should really think about the repercussions from lowballing people on their rides- if someone offered me $1500 for it i would probably ask them to leave in a not so polite way. Appreciate the feedback but come on now- get realistic.

Well now, that changes things a bit. That is far more info than what could be determined from the pics posted (no info either) by the original poster. I'm also guessing at this point that the pics don't do the truck justice.

I think I did OK guessing the price based on the pics, I wasn't too far off from your original purchase price. No way of knowing about all the new parts.

And you know, the truck looked familiar, but I just couldn't place where I had seen it, lol.

To me its still a 3750 dollar truck. The stuff that was done to the truck was mostly maintenance. Bushings, steering box, tires. No one should have to pay for the shipping or '$1000 in parts not installed'

just because you do some maintenance to a vehicle and put a stereo in it doesn't mean it doubles te price of the truck. IMO

no offense taken- it is what it is- a very nice driver truck. if i was in the market for buying a truck, and yes, i am particular, than i would look at this truck, if i was looking for a truck that needed work, had wore out parts, a vehicle that has not been maintained in years and rusted out, then i would look for a truck in the $4000 range around here. and I am asking $7000 for it.

$1000-$1500 wont get you much here (TX)at all. That is why I stated that in the area he has the truck for sale , it is much more solid than most anything you will find. That adds value if GM panels are of any importance to you . I have paid a large amount for the nice trucks I have found and in return , I have been able to sell them for good money. I do not like to lose money so I buy n ice stuff to begin with. when I bought the Black 78 back , I paid 10K for it ten added the wheels/tires, exhaust, drop , etc. When I sell it , it wont be cheap either . Nice solid trucks are worth more . I think you have a nice truck Gary66. Good luck with the sale . I am confused on Dentons statement that he is looking to buy this truck locally. That is part of what brings the prices down .The price of that truck would be less in DFW than where you live .

The southwest has a lot of squares and other pickups which are rust free, but usually interiors are shot from the sun. Also, anything rubber or plastic (right down to the connectors in the harnesses) get fried in the sun - and you can't even buy a lot of these parts. The pictures always look good. For fun, search craigslist in Tucson, Phoenix, NM, etc. and check the prices. Here is a sample:
