Is there any reason why a 700r4 wouldn't bolt up to an older SBC?

None at all. You can bolt it to any Chevy V-8 back to 1957 (55 & 56 don't have starter mounting holes). All you need is a compatible flexplate.

You need a dual pattern flexplate because the newer torque convertor will be roughly a 1/4'' off the old pattern.

+1. This should be the only thing that needs to be changed on the engine for the swap to a 700R4. Of course the trans mount and crossmember will be different, and the driveshaft may need to be altered as well. I have heard rumors of interferance with factory exhaust on some applications, but have yet to have that become an issue myself.

So if I was to go down to napa nad tell them I needed a particular flex plate, what would I tell them? What year etc? Thanks for the help

Tell them a dual pattern Chevy small block flex plate. If they look at you funny, tell them a flexplate for a 1985 Chevy 1/2 ton 2WD SBC automatic (any early to mid 80's vehicle with the 4speed automatic trans will work though).

I couldn't find anything for flexplate on Napa's website, but here is one from Kragen's website that will work. Sold under the Pioneer brand, just standard quality.
