'72 rear wheel stud dilemma
so, i'm swapping a '72 1/2-ton truck rear into my '66 C-10...my dad went to get a new wheel stud today for one that's broken...every parts store shows the size to be 1/2-20...but the issue is the knurl diameter...Rock Auto says the knurl is .535", but the stud my dad took out is bigger...it measures .6xx
i don't see anywhere that there were 2 different size studs for the rear...anybody have an idea? thanks |

Re: '72 rear wheel stud dilemma
Probably not the answer you want to hear, but it is very likely that the holes got "stretched" and would no longer tightly hold a stock size stud. Since studs with a larger knurl are commonly available for other makes of cars or trucks, the PO probably chose one of those and drilled out the holes.
This isn't as bad as it sounds. Just take your old stud and a caliper or mike to your friendly local parts store and look through their stock till you find a stud that is close to what you have. I used to work in the parts business, so I am saying this from experience. Ray |

Re: '72 rear wheel stud dilemma
I know the wheel studs are differnet form a '72 3/4ton to a '59 3/4 ton.The '59's are alittle bit smalller then the 59's.I am not sure how much smaller of the top of my head.We thought they would be the same, but there not.My buddy wants to replace all the wheel studs on his '59 Panel, and i have a good bit of wheel studs left over form my two trucks. We thought we were going to use them on the panel but the ones i have are a little big for it.But they are both 3/4 tons.I guess chevy stud were smaller back then.
