Re: Posi's Auburn or Eaton?

Eaton, because it's rebuildable. The Auburn unit uses "cone-type" friction material which actually wears into the case. It may last as long as you own the truck...but then again maybe not. Why take the chance?
With the Eaton, if the clutches wear to the point of excess slippage, you can replace them easily.

If you are just changing carriers, we can walk you through that. But if you intend to get deeper into this axle, seek professional help. It is not a simple "bolt together" thing. It's a wise investment.....with a warranty.

+1 on the Tru-trac. For street driving I would take it over any kind of locker or clutch-type posi. It is totally noiseless and transparent. Until you need it you don't even know it is there.

Auburns like to go boom. We use a Eaton clutch-type in the rear of the 68 and it's awesome on the street.

Eaton seems to be the popular choice between to two you are considering. Not too long ago i was having to decide on a posi unit as well. I ended up going with a detroit locker and i love it!

Re: Posi's Auburn or Eaton?

I have an Auburn in my Blazer. I chose it because I have had an Auburn in my 455 rwhp Mustang that has seen tons of abuse, and I haven't had ANY issues with it. I put an Eaton in my last p/u ('87 2wd 1/2 ton), and it began to give me issues after 11 months...rebuildable or not, that's way too soon to have to deal with that .

Go Auburn!!! And War Eagle!!!

Re: Posi's Auburn or Eaton?

I like the true-trac. Nothing to wear out and works different than a clutch/cone type. It doesnt just try to lock the wheels together, it just senses a difference in available torque from each wheel and compensates for it. In other words it doesnt care if the wheels are spinning at different speeds it just applies power to the wheel with the most traction reguardless of differential speed.

These little guys are great in Jeeps and 4x4s. There are a few other options out there that are very similar. Aussie locker comes to mind (they are what I've had). Google "lunchbox locker"

Never had one in a 2wd but they don't use friction plates and all that. No need for special oils either. Just teeth on either side. You are locked up until cornering where the centrifical force allows one side to slide open and unlock one wheel.

The Richmonds are supposed to be quieter than the Aussies but both are quieter than a detroit. Really not loud though, you'll hear a slight ratchting sound every now and again.

Simple install too. No need to set gears etc. Took about an hour start to finish in the last D44 I did. This is the route I'm going in my 72.
