Oil for 71 C20 4sp & Eaton HO52+Original NoSpin Doc pics

I went to do a rear brake job on the 71 C20 and the fluid that came out looked like mud!!!!
What are you guys running for weights and brands for 71 dana 60's with No Spin Detroit lockers? I believe with the Detroit there is no need for friction modifier. I assume you refill to the plug height on the cover.

Also, what is the correct oil for the 4sp trans in the same truck.
I am assuming the top pipe plug is the fill and the bottom the drain.
Do I refill to the fill hole or is there a specific amount of gear oil that goes back in?

Also I found all of the original NoSpin documents in the glovebox! Is that cool or what!

Re: Oil for 71 C20 4sp & Dana 60 + Org NoSpin Doc pics

Use 90 weight gear oil GL-5 in both of them. There are a lot of multiple weight gear lubs now. 75W90 80w90 85w140. Any will work as long as it covers 90. Each unit will hold about 6 pint's. You fill it to the level of the fill plug. There probably is no drain on the rear end but you can drain it out of the lower bolt holes of the cover or pull the cover. Fill the rear through the plug in the cover. Do not disturb the ring gear thrust adjustment.

I'd do the same, GL-5, but that's just me. I would recommend staying away from 85w140 in the transmission, especially in upstate NY, would NOT be fun to shift when cold.

The Dana 60 does need limited slip additive. My had a tag bolted to it stating that. The longer tag. The short tag was the ratio. I believe it has both drain and fill plugs.

Oh, and flush that brake fluid.

I now realize I do NOT have a dana 60...... Obviously I haven't done enough homework on this truck. All of the dana 60/70 pictures don't look like what I have!

I will search it out tomorrow. Must be something pretty common.

That is an Eaton HO52 (72 if it were a 1 ton). Different animal from the D60. The Eaton was very good diff. too bad it was discontinued. Many say that it is every bit as good as GM 14 bolt. Drop out diff, removable inspection cover, strong, slim lines, what's not to love? Too bad a 4.10 is the highest gear available.

Re: Oil for 71 C20 4sp & Dana 60 + Org NoSpin Doc pics

Thanks guys!!! This board is the best! I had never heard of that rear before.

As I've mentioned in my other thread;
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=4141857
I'm doing this for a friend who wants to continue to use it in his orchard. He told me he does LOAD it with 2500-2700lbs, so the springs probably ride a little better then!!

The truck is really coming along and I hope to have the rear brakes rebuilt tonight. I'm going to drain the mud out of the rear and refill it. I may have to drive it a little and drain it again. The stuff that's in there is quite nasty. I'm sure the trans isn't much better!

Re: Oil for 71 C20 4sp & Dana 60 + Org NoSpin Doc pics

I would try to find a GL-4 for the transmission. Gl-5 has additives that wear the brass syncro rings out faster. The Gl-5 is great for gears and bearings and is OK for the newer transmissions.
If it says GL-4 and GL-5 on the container it is GL-5.

Do a web search and you will find that there is a lot of debate about Gl-4 and GL-5 in old transmisssions.
I think the consensus is that if the trans called for GL-4, you should use that.

Thanks!!! I was going to buy gear oil tonight!

Only problem is I thought almost everything is GL5 at this point. I will see what I can find.

Re: Oil for 71 C20 4sp & Dana 60 + Org NoSpin Doc pics

The only brand of GL-4 that I have been able to find anymore is Sta-Lube. Their packaging makes their products look cheap, but they have been around for decades. I would much rather use Valvoline which I have used for rear ends.
If you find a Gl-4 product other than Sta-Lube I would like to hear about it.

Where are you buying your Sta-lube?

All I could find local was GL-5, but I will swap it out when I find something else.

What about Pennzoil synchromesh? It is supposed to be OK for yellow metals.
But it doesn't list the weight. I'm afraid it would be too thin.
