4x4 Header Pics

I'd be curious to see what headers other out there are running on their 73-87 4x4s. I've been through two sets of hedman hedders on my 85 K10. I've had a hard time keeping the plug wires off the primaries. A few years ago I bought wire holders and yet still I got two wires touching, plus these things make it a pain to change header gaskets. I'm not a fan at all of this style of headers I'm running now, they make it difficult to run plug wires and to remove plugs.

Sorry I dont have pics right now, its 9:30 west coast and I just got done changing a header gasket with frustration so I needed to vent. I'll get a pic of my setup tomorrow in the light.

Re: 4x4 Header Pics

The Hedman #69230's have been a popular header with the guys over on coloradok5.com They don't hang down as low and they clear the passenger side shackle bolt. They are also available in the ceramic coated under #69830.

Re: 4x4 Header Pics

Will these headers also fit a 84 2wd with vortec heads? I need some for my new engine.

Re: 4x4 Header Pics

I had a set of dynomax black jacks and I could get to every plug with a socket and no wires touched or got burnt up. As for the bottom end I'd get the sumit header buddy reducers that are just like ball end like using ball and socket headers so you don't use a gasket at all on the collector, but as for up top in order to avoid replacing gaskets use some copper or aluminum reuseable ones. Some locking header bolts to avoid em backing off, and try to get a thick block side flange if you can to avoid warpage.

Re: 4x4 Header Pics

hooker headers they fit real nice even with the z bar for the clutch in the way.As far as wires go I cut my own so would fit right and not have a mile of slack like most aftermarket sets do.

Re: 4x4 Header Pics

I have these and they fit pretty well.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G9006/

The smaller tubes make for better low end power and they have thicker flanges than the Hedman 96230's so they shouldn't warp as easy.

Easy plug access except #6 where you have to use a wrench on the spark plug socket. Not even close to as difficult to work with vs. the Hookers I used to have.

I got them same headers on dad's 84 c10 and was not happy with them, the flange was just as thick as regular old cheap flowtech and they actually had flowtech part numbers on them, well the no. 1 tube on the DS hit right on the spark plug and I had to dimple the tube to clear the plug. Then they hang down below the truck at an angle. Now it's not bad but it causes the pipe to have to have a bend in it you can't run a straight pipe off it because it'd eventually hit the ground. Them being tilted down in back and hitting the no.3 plug made me really mad. Now on ebay you can get what looks like the same headers in stainless for $158 and IMo I'd jump on them for sure.

Vortec heads have no special header considerations, if they'll fit the truck, they'll bolt up to the Vortecs.

They must have changed since I got mine almost ten years ago. I had none of the problems you describe and have put the same old set on three different trucks now. They have held up well.

I might take a look at the ebay ones for my 67.

Re: 4x4 Header Pics

I don't have any pics of mine, but I ran with the Edelbrock TES system.
No problems with any of the gaskets or dounts and it's just as easy to get to the plugs and wires now as it was when it had the stock manifolds.

The only issue I had with mine was that despite being made for the 4wd, the y-pipe didn't clear my front driveshaft . . . course the suspension lift, clocked and raised transfer case probably didn't help either.

Re: 4x4 Header Pics

these are the summit brand headers from above we bought for the 84c10 and they had the flowtech number on the box, not sure if you can see the issue on the 2nd plug(no. 3 cyl.) on the DS or not..

The dynomax headers we had on a 76 c10 with stick shift, and then put em on the auto 86 4x4.
