Gas Tanks

I have an '84 chevy short bed with factory dual tanks. Are these interchangeable from driver to passenger side?

My drivers side has a leak, so I want to move the passenger side tank over and get rid of the bad one. I will then fill the passenger side door.

Re: Gas Tanks

Tanks are interchangeable from side to side but sending units are not so you have to switch that also

The tanks are cheap new. It might not be worth the headache of pulling the passenger side tank off, swapping out the sender & reworking the plumbing to eliminate the passenger side tank. The lines are a pain in the butt to work with.

What about leaving it alone and just running on the passenger side tank for a while? You may find that a single 16-gallon tank is no fun at all when you have to stop at the gas station twice as often.

Re: Gas Tanks

True.... I can maybe find a used tank on Craigslist also. It would keep me from having to fill the other gas door too.

I was going to mention that also but i assumed he had his reasons for doing it.My truck has duals doors and only one tank , I just figuired it wasn't worth the trouble of closing it up and I think only one person has ever noticed I don't have dual tanks

My '76 shortbed has only one 16 gallon tank, and frankly it sucks i get decent gas mileage and it seems like im at the gas station way too often. I would love to have dual tanks but dont wanna go through the hassle of the lines.

Now imagine if you got 7 mpg like I do. I'm just glad I don't have to drive that far.

Re: Gas Tanks

If you are going to go to one tank, why not try and put a Blazer tank in the rear? I know that interferes with the spare, but you can get a single tank with a larger capacity that way. I was thinking about doing something like that with the filler neck coming out behind the license plate.

Good idea on using the Blazer tank but you would have to mount the Blazer tank really low to fill from behind the license plate. The top of the tank is above the top of the frame rail in stock configuration. That would put the filler above the bumper if run straight across. The filler neck also points to the passenger side and is located close to the edge so it would be hard to plumb it to the center rear.

Standard capacity is 31 gallons so it is pretty much the same as dual tanks on a short bed.

Re: Gas Tanks

Good point about the filler neck, I hadn't thought that far into yet. I suppose it could be customized to work with a fuel door installed in the right location on the bedside, and then fill in the old ones. However, with that much work involved, it would probably be easier to repair the existing tank.

Re: Gas Tanks

I have a drivers side great shape w/sending unit and whatever else you need on an 83 1/2 ton chassis I can't get rid of. Before it goes to scrap heaven I need to cut the tank in half or they won't take it. You can have it for the cost of shipping, however iIhave never tried to ship a "used" gas tank across the country so that might be a pain. PM if it's worth it to you.

Re: Gas Tanks

PM Sent. Thanks.

It sounds like either way, a new (or used) gas tank would be the way to go.

Re: Gas Tanks

I bought a used gas tank from a friend that was parting out a truck for $20 with the straps and sending unit. It was a lot cheaper than a new tank, you just have to make sure it's good and clean before you install it.
