I have a 80 truck with the big gauge but my needle broke and I can,t find the right one in the bone yard,I took the whole gauge from another truck ,not my year but looks like it will fit in, just the sweep of the gauge isn,t as big as mine but it should work, shouldn,t it

As long as it is a gauge that operates from 0Ω to 90Ω, which all GM gauges do, then it should work regardless of how big or small the sweep of the needle is.

Re: will other gas gauges work?

trouble is now I took the needle off and so I don,t know where to put the needle .My thought was to see where it sits when key turned off, then turn key on and see how far it goes on the gauge ,lets say it showed 1/2 tank of gas ,and then set the needle at empty with the key turned off.

Re: will other gas gauges work?

Should be able to swap it out with any fuel gauge (that says unleaded fuel, not diesel) from 78-87. They have the same shape and mounting holes, and the area underneath for 2 indicator lights.

*edit*
Next time I'll read all the posts first.
My only suggestion on finding a good spot for the needle, is to fill the tank 100% and put it on full. The needle does not bottom out w/out power or anything, it stays where it was last even w/out power. I just checked my truck, cycling the ignition does nothing, needle does not move. Plus the two gauges I have on my shelf, they both have different readings like it is just staying where it was last.
