Replacing Shocks Question

How can you tell if your shocks need replacing or not? I have the inner fenders off my 72 burb and before I put them back on, wanted to replace the shocks if they need it.
Can someone tell me when is the time to replace them?
Thanks for the help,
Joe

Re: Replacing Shocks Question

ill give it a go. how do the shocks look, do they fill like they have any damping when you compress them, are they original, rubber inserts blown out, bent, broke, worn out, these are all factors to look at. my answer is yes since is such a cheap part.

Re: Replacing Shocks Question

I was always told if you push down with all your weight and release the truck and it bounces up and down more then twice it's time for shocks.

But if you don't know the age on the ones you have and they don't look new, I'd just swap them. One less thing to worry about. Also if you spend the extra for a better shock you won't be disapointed.

Re: Replacing Shocks Question

I've had good luck with KYB and Monroe. They aren't the cheapest but I can't complain. Currently running CPPs shocks up front. Not sure who actually makes them but they seem good and were pretty cheap. Haven't had a lot of miles on them yet though. KYBs on the back.
