Angry running rough

On my way into work, my truck started running rough. It feels like it is possibly missing and the exhaust smells strong.

I won't have time to look into it until this weekend, but I was hoping to get some possible starting points. It is a bone stock 350.
  • Wires
  • points
  • plugs
  • carb (I just filled up so bad gas?)

Re: running rough

Yeah, my first thought was fuel filter, too, especially since you just put gas in it. It's an easy change, but if it doesn't do it, I'd look at plugs/cap/rotor next.

Re: running rough

Good call on the fuel filter. I'll start there tomorrow.

Re: running rough

You could have had a plug wire pop off too, or get next to the manifold. I've had that happen before.

Re: running rough

When I read exhaust smells strong...I thought ignition. I'd bet it's got carbon build up on the contacts of the cap. Go ahead and go pop the cap off and check to see how much crap is built up.

Re: running rough

I changed the cap and rotor, checked the plugs and wires and it seems to be running much better. I bought a fuel filter too, but I haven't had a chance to install it.

I did notice that the wires on the passenger side were off the wire holder thing above the valve cover. I've got the wires in the stock routing and wire retainers so I don't think anything was touching the block or exhaust.
