Putting a Gear Vendor overdrive on my 68

Been a while since I have posted anything... Shops been busy and so have I!! Since we are a Gear Vendor dealer I am putting one on my 68.. It will be at Hot Rod drag week on display... Currently the truck has a M21 in it but Im going to change it to a M20 since I will have to ability to split every gear.. Here are a few pics.. (Gotta love air ride when you need to get under the truck! No jack required!) Pretty easy install, remove your tailshaft and install the adapter, hang the gear vendor off the back of that and shorten the driveshaft... ... Hook up a few wires and waa laa!! Pics to follow soon...

Ahem... you mentioned something about pics?

Oh, and how much do these puppies run, and how does the final drive compare to a 700R? Supposedly stronger too, I believe.

Gear Vendors behind turbo transmissions rule, they can handle huge horsepower and are often used in off road racing with 850+ horsepower. Plus u have full power over and under shifting capabilities. I'm saving to put one in the dually asap...............................

Depending on what trans you have they are roughly $2600.00... The overdrive ratio is .78 so roughly 22 percent.. What that means is around a 500 RPM drop at 60.. They will handle 1800 hp and gobs of torque... Advantage to a 700r4 or a newer 5 or 6 speed manual is strength.. 700R4s are not know to hold up to a lot of abuse.. You can build a bad a$$ turbo 350 or 400 and put a Gear vendor behind it and it would be the best of both worlds.. Same with a manual... You can rip gears a lot faster with a good old four speed and have your over drive. Plus I think they are a little stronger.. Truly a awesome set up..

From what I understand, a lot of motorhomes are using GV OD.I think that would convince me of the torque handling ability.I've also never heard of a broke one.Let us know how it works out.

I installed one I found in a junkyard behind the NP205 on my 72 Blazer. By far the best mod I have ever made.

Cleszkie, how much of a lift do you have in your blazer and how much extra length did it add, thinking of sticking one behind mine with the SM465

Re: Putting a Gear Vendor overdrive on my 68

Got it all put in on Friday... Man is it awesome!! Its cool to roll out in first gear, split in to first over and it barks the tires hard then rip second and bark the tires again! Here are some pics of the install and it in the parking lot at the shop with a fellow board members truck and a few other cars we built..

Looks good.

Any pics with the crossmember in place? I'm trying to get a feel for how much is cantilevered.

from what I've read almost all the cars at drag week use the GV unit. that is quite a testament to it's strength.

Heres mine with a 208 transfer case behind a T400 it hangs 36 inches behind the cross member. I had to go with a CV joint on the drive shaft because of the angle and the short drive shaft.

Thanks. I guess I don't need to worry with that hanging off the cast iron SM420 which hangs off the cast iron bell housing.
