Granny tranny

Transmission is getting a little noisy and I need to know what fluid to use and where do I fill it from. Only a temporary fix, new tranny not scheduled till early next year.

I have limited experience with these transmissions, but it appears the fill plug is dead center on top near the bellhousing. The drain plug is in the bottom rear. The 1960 Chevy shop manual indicates full capacity is 5 ½ pints and the plugs should be tightened to 30-35 ft. lbs.

I would suggest that you drive the truck a bit to get it up to temp before draining so as to remove as much of the old oil as possible.

I would either use 90wt gear oil or depending on the condition of the trans (not being able to shift it or hear the "noises" myself) Redline MTL oil.

After draining completely the easiest way to refill is to remove the shifter and pour it in through the top.

The last time I serviced mine I drove it about 40 miles from work and upon pulling into the driveway promptly pulled the drain plug and let it drain overnight. Got up the next morning and reinstalled the drain plug and filled it up.

fill plug should be about 1/2 way up on the passenger side. 80-90wt gear oil

Make a tag and put on keys"NO TRANSMISSION OIL" so someone doesn't try to drive it while it's drained! Don't ask me why I recommend this

I have a Motorcycle shop and a customer bought all of his oils to save some money he changed his own. He drained his oil and trans refilled oil,wife called him in for supper. Next day he took his bike to work then trailored it to my shop locked up!

thanx guys.it's shifting ok so a change of fluids 'll do. i hope.again thanx for the tips.

I put Lucas Gear oil in my 64 GMC tranny because it was a little stiff to shift. About 3 months later I came back to the truck and it shifted beautifully. I had a PTO unit installed later and whatever oil they put in stiffened up the shifter again.
We would drain the Lucas Gear Oil before winter because it would make shifting difficult in the Big Rigs but once spring came around we'd put it back in.
