Could you guys in the mid west explain ecactly what areas are considered part of the "rust belt"? What states etc.?
Aso. Who else lives in a state where they use salt on the road in the winter. ie: Utah....

You only need to look at the vehicles to see which ones are in the rust belt. Believe me, Minnesota is one of them.

Safe bet that any state that gets snow on a regular basis will be tossing salt onto the roads. And as we all know, salt and cars don't mix well.

Pennsylvainia uses it like there's no tomorrow!

Since they started using that liquid salt, everything is white days before a snow storm. After they spray it down, it dries on the road, the traffic gets it airborne in a dusty state so the cars parked in your driveway get covered in salt without even going anywhere!

This winter has been nasty too. Everytime the roads get nice, another few inches show up. Last snow storm we got 23 inches! Yikes!

They use some salt here though not as much as some other areas of the country. Salt is not effective when it gets bitterly cold so they rely more on sand here. I don't let my truck out on the streets when its a warmer winter day and sloppy out.

I agree with bobs409,Pa is getting crazy with the salt.2-3 days before snow they spray that brine on the roads.That's why my trucks hide inside till spring.

I'm from toronto Canada(close to it anyway), but i've lived in other places in Ontario though, and just about everywhere uses salt or a combination of salt and sand. Like somebody said before, when you go too far north, it gets so cold that the salt won't even melt the ice! so they have to use sand. But down in southern Ontario, they love their salt.......but I hate it, cuz my truck is my daily driver! This past fall I sanded all the old paint down on the driver side door and around a few chipped spots. After I primered it(unfortunatley with primer/surfacer) but the proimer is quite porous, so i have little tiny rust specks all over my poor door

why did I use a surfacer you ask?? well I didn't think i was gonna have to drive it this winter and after mid october, it was too frickin cold to repaint with regular primer.
I'm not worried though, cuz eventually i'll be sand blasting everything anyway when i start the restore

definately minnesota. i went to the car wash with my 150 last week and the sprayer blew a whole bunch of paint off. one trip down the highway and poof instant rust.

Darren, There is also a very thin rust belt out here too! Anywhere west of the coast range...LOL! Ever seen the trucks and cars in Westport or along the Oregon coast where you can still drive on the beach? Dang ugly! Also I have been told that Spokane uses salt on the roads too! I have seen some really rust free rigs over there so I am not sure if it is the short season or these are trucks that were only used on the farm and never made it into town during the snowy weather.

BTW...when you are done with the blue beast...I want a sweet deal on your orange truck!

You will be the first to know when the Orange GMC goes up for sale. One day I would like to replace it with a 72 3/4 ton 4X4 Cheyenne Super W/ A/C.

well im from east texas and i have no idea what salt on the road is but i sure know what it will do to a truck. my truck was a northern truck and when i bought it you could see through the driver side bed.
