1/2 ton vs 3/4 ton frames (86/87 build project)
From everything I have read the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton frames were the same but they are not. My 1/2 ton 86 frame web width is narrower in the rear section in two spots than the 87 3/4 ton. I was thinking of using the 1/2 ton frame as the cab I am using is sitting on it but as I am springing it for a 3/4 ton I guess I am now using the 87 3/4 ton frame. The difference may not be that big of a deal but I might as well just go with the heavier frame as the work isn't really that much more.

Here are a couple photos of the differences in the rear section of the 86 1/2 ton and 87 3/4 ton frames (the 3/4 ton does not have the notches).

I lifted the 87 cab off the frame today and also removed the 86 bed. Hear is a photo of my set-up. I made a spreader beam for my backhoe which slides over my round bale forks. It is 8' long so it does not squeeze the cab or bed. It worked great.

A Backhoe is a handy tool to have.
Now I have to finish stripping the 87 frame so I can sandblast and paint it. |
